wtf ......I know everyone hates Fehr but you cant blame him for being good at what he does. - Alexzanki
Good at what he does... hahah...Heck I could sit in a board room and tell players, "No we're going keep holding out because the deals will get better. If you can last till, oh, say January on an extended vacation, then we'll take whatever the current deal is." |

Parise and Suter are making $54M in the first five years of their deals.
That's $10.8M/year, and yet cap hit of "only" $7.5M/year because of the stretched out back-load.
And that's where the "middle class fear" comes from.
Those guys are still going to get their $10.8M/year for those first five years, and now that's $3.3M/year less of cap space for everybody else on the team under the NHL's proposed scheme. |

It isn't just about guys who already have 5 or more year contacts who would be hurt buy a 5 year limit. If there is a limit like that the thinking would be 5 year deals are for the stars, the top 5-10%. Then the 4 year deals would be the guys who are in the next 20-25%. The guys who are fringe 2nd mostly 3rd line guys would get 3 year deals and the lower 3rd line guys and 4th liners who just get the 1 maybe two year deals and would have to like year to year. With a 5 year limit you wouldn't see guys like Jason Chimera would not get 4 year deals like he did with the Jackets. You think with a 5 year limit on deals Jay Beagle gets a three year deal from the Caps or Justin Abdelkader gets a 4 year deal with the Wings? Heck no! The limt won't just hurt the top guys it will give owners a benchmark for what the stars get so the lower guys can't get that and will reduce the years of all contacts being signed. - icehammer97
Quit drinking the kool-aid. About 6% of players have longer than 5 year deals. So tell me, how would that 40 players affect the entire pay structure? It doesn't. The problem for the NHLPA is that it slows down the rate of growth of salaries because there can be no more long term back diving deals..... |

Am I really still being honoured on your location?
I'm touched (but not by Sandusky - there seems to be some confusion about that). |

thats the point, they want costs to slow down. If they can get a handle on inflation on player salaries, more clubs with be profitable and the league happier, the players will still increase, just at a slower rate. - walshy66
Totes! The players will still get their money as they always do.
I have a hard time feeling bad for the NHLPA when I hear things like my co-workers daughter dates a NHL player playing in the KHL right now and he buys her a $10,000 Prada purse for Xmas......... |

These contract negotiation lines are drawn to try to squeeze more money out of the owners.
Every time there has been a negotiation sticking point, it's cleared up by the owners dropping more money on the table.
I expect the owners to get the player to move towards their contract negotiation requests when more "make whole" money is put on the table.
Then there could be another sticking point for the NHLPA on the transition period... which will force the owners to plop more money on the table. |

What did you expect , it's the art of beeing anoying at the negociation table .
It's better then Goodnow simply locking himself in a room and not admiting to himself that Bettman is right .
Am I endorsing Fehr and his measures, not at all , I think he is taking a huge make or break risk, either he comes out of this a genius , or the fat man that held fans and owners hostage for a bag a peanuts. |

Let's put this in perspective...
-In Canada, "the average Joe's" annual salary is ~$45K, while the average NHL player's annual player salary is $2.4M
- The average NHL pay cheque every two weeks is ~$92K, more than double the "the average Joe's" ANNUAL salary.
- Based on a $45K salary, it would take "the average Joe" 53.3 YEARS to make $2.4M. Pretty much their entire work life/career, and that's on the high side.
It blows my mind with how out of touch the NHLPA is. They have ZERO idea how good they have it. I hope league takes these spoiled brats to the cleaners! - As_I_See_It
I'm not defending millionaires by making this statement, but you have to recognize the average salary for these guys most likely will go down significantly once they are done playing hockey.
The best they could hope for after their playing career is an executive job for one of these teams. Coaches and scouts don't make squat compared to what they made as a player. If they didn't plan accordingly, they could join the average joe tax bracket really really fast after their playing days are done.
They might not know right now how good they have it, but one day in their life they may regret missing out on this guaranteed money they could have had right now... |
