Eklund: 4 Reasons NHLPA is Killing Themselves Arguing For Longer Than 5 Year Deals
- Eklund

I'll keep saying this as simple as possible and as complicated as mjl wants to make it out be .

The 3rd and 4th liners will push this thing to get done. !

Its JUST THAT SIMPLE!

F-ing DiPietro...

The only reason why there is still a lockout going on is because Donald Fehr is running the NHLPA. Fehr is not trying to "make a deal". He's trying to live up to his reputation as a "tough negotiator", which translates into forcing the owners to lock out the players by failing to engage the league in discussions prior to this past summer and telling the players to essentially leave him alone and let him decide when its time to make a deal.

Anyone who is familiar with MLB should know Fehr's M.O. at this point. Fehr doesn't negotiate. He makes demands and doesn't come off them. Hence the reason why all the concessions you read about come from the owners. He has a reputation to uphold. This lockout was a foregone conclusion once Fehr was hired by the NHLPA.

I dont care about any of this sh!t, get the deal done or cancel the season. I could care less how much money the players do or do not make or how much money the owners do or do not make. This is league is a (frank)ing farce.

Coming here is kind of the opposite of that statement.

It isn't just about guys who already have 5 or more year contacts who would be hurt buy a 5 year limit. If there is a limit like that the thinking would be 5 year deals are for the stars, the top 5-10%. Then the 4 year deals would be the guys who are in the next 20-25%. The guys who are fringe 2nd mostly 3rd line guys would get 3 year deals and the lower 3rd line guys and 4th liners who just get the 1 maybe two year deals and would have to like year to year. With a 5 year limit you wouldn't see guys like Jason Chimera would not get 4 year deals like he did with the Jackets. You think with a 5 year limit on deals Jay Beagle gets a three year deal from the Caps or Justin Abdelkader gets a 4 year deal with the Wings? Heck no! The limt won't just hurt the top guys it will give owners a benchmark for what the stars get so the lower guys can't get that and will reduce the years of all contacts being signed.
- icehammer97

Doubtful. Only what, 7% of players have contracts over 5 years? Majority of teams don't give out deals longer than that, and you don't see what you are talking about as a trend.

Remember also that 7 year deals will be possible for your own free agents.

thats the point, they want costs to slow down. If they can get a handle on inflation on player salaries, more clubs with be profitable and the league happier, the players will still increase, just at a slower rate.

If the season is kaput , the rumoured "done deal" of Luongo to Toronto looks even worse, and should be pulled off the table by the Leafs.25% of his prime years left would be eliminated by next year, and who knows what a 1 year layoff would do to his game

The PA guys here will drag up some article, that describes some guy's opinion and reasoning why the 5 year contract limit will hurt the entire PA.

This will be presented as evidence in an argument against historical fact. The people presenting this "evidence" are not capable of understanding logic or reasoning. The concept of bring a knife to a gunfight is lost on these people. They just love their knives.

Then someone will come on here and go ballistic all over people and the thread will go to hell.

Tomorrow, on this thread, we will be discussing favorite Christmas recipes.

Gary Bettmans interview the other day stated back in 2004 only one contract over 5 years now there is 60 contracts. Around 10%.

I like the 5 years plus option for 7 for sticking with own teams, as I believe this is the NHL version of non guaranteed contracts unlike what the NFL has and the two weeks the rest of us get.

Noone seems to mention the possibility of a 7 year contract being allowed if a player resigns with their current team.

Just another reason the PA should already be on board with the concept.
