I get it. If you're a depth player making $600K or the league minimum and likely to have a 4-5 year career , you know you aren't going to get the $600K back if the season is cancelled.

That is why Cherry is suggesting a private vote.

As much as a secret vote is needed, it would make Fehr look like an even bigger douche. I'm certain more than 50% of players would vote 'yes'.

still can't understand how people are on the players side.

Honestly, I hate Bettman, but let's be realistic. The owners are losing money. At the same time, the players are making guaranteed money. In any business, you cannot survive if your expenses are more than your revenue. When more than 50% of teams lose money, it's bad business.

They've settled on the revenue share, but the sticking points are this.
1. CBA term. League wants 10 with opt out at 8, players want 8 with opt out at 6. problems with this. The $300M from the league to the players was going to be spaced over the 10 years instead. Reducing that term financially burdens teams. Pure greed, the players will get the money, they just want it now.

2. Term of contract. Owners want 5 with an option for 7 if with same team. Players want no restrictions. Why? Players are signing terms and deals that make them set for life. Crosby could never play an NHL game again and have $100M. Players want a lifetime guarantee of money. What other profession can you negotiate a guaranteed $100M for 10 - 15 years when you're only 27 years old? Answer is, none. Sorry players. No one in life gets guaranteed retirements. 5 years is more than enough.

3. Transitional rules .....i.e. extra-system $$ from issues such as amnisty buyouts, burying players, retirement, etc...I'm not sure what those dollars add up to over the course of a year but is it - and the other two issues - really big enough to continue this stare-down.

Everybody needs to understand this is all about tactics now. The NHL situated itself to make a play for the middleground (here's the extra 90+ million but in exchange give us what we require on issues 1,2, and 3). Fehr came back and said we agree to the 90 milly now lets discuss negotiate 1, 2, and 3.

At 20 milly per game when do the players buckle? I still look at the formula the NBA and its players settled in it last year.

Player contracts - 4 years, 5 years for Bird rule
Annual increase - 4.5%, 7.5% for Bird rule
CBA length - 10 years with a mutual optout after 6
Transitional - annual amnesty buyout of 1 player

the players entire approach was to win the PR battle.. but that started to slip away as this continued.

the players dont even have the advantage of public opinion anymore.. they are just being viewed upon as cry babies who arent getting their way

boo (frank)ing hoo.. take the offer and get back to hockey.. you have already lost. bettman was better than fehr.

Unfortunately the players that are at or near league mini, get what they get. They are the filler players, or role players. They will get what they get. This is not about the little guy, it is abou tthe health of the NHL in general. Basically the owners need to be protected against themselves...No player should make more than an owner, that is just crazy..

A guy having a drink in a bar, notices another guy drinking pretty heavily. Before he takes a drink, he pulls out a picture and looks at it. Then he takes another drink.

The guys walks over and askes why he looks at the picture before he drinks?

The drunk guy replies, it is a picture of my wife, When I look at this picture and she looks good, It will be time to go home...

If I'm Fehr for a day ....give in on the player contract issues, get some middle ground on the CBA term (10 but 6 - like the nba - works), but fight for some transitional issues like amnesty buyouts and retirement dollars. That's money in the players pockets and they like that. And a lot of the owners would support those one off buyouts.

*is it too apparent I'd like Komi and/or Lombardi boughtout?

Anyway ...that's the (frank)in' deal ....now drop the puck.
