Because the deal might not work out for the players over that time span, obviously. I think it should be longer also. I'd like an 8 year CBA with an opt out after 6. But there should be some guidelines for being able to opt out. Some metrics applied to it, for either side to be able to opt out.

The owners of the Penguins have been at the meetings in NY. They've said they will leave NY if discussions break off or a deal is struck. They are leaving NY tonight. Soooooooooo, sometime tonight, tomorrow or Sunday it will be D DAY for the NHL. Either negotiations have gone no where or a deal is about to reached.
Time is just about up.

The NHL season is hanging in the balance this weekend.

Funny how they can come up with tonnes of revenue growth numbers to justify guaranteed yearly increases, but when that's dropped, they don't have enough confidence in those numbers to agree to it for more than 5 years.
