Remember Luke Schenn?

Who exactly have the Leafs successfully developed to an elite level in your lifetime?? Why would you want to bring a kid into this poop show of an environment as a teenager?? Let's take our time, let him grow into a great player instead of expecting him to be one right off the hop.

- Domidives

Agree 100%, but would still like to see him out there for 4/5 games.

Comparing Schenn to Rielly is a little bizarre. Schenn was a bad pick and Wilson was a bad coach.

Ya but he was just bad.
- Fakepartofme

Playing him as a teenager on a crap team didn't help him though.

At any rate, I don't see many of the elite teams bringing in 18 year olds to the NHL level for the better of their development.

I disagree. If Rielly is ready let him play. The kid is far better then the league he's playing in, how does that help his development? I trust Carlyle more than you. And who have the Leafs rushed? Kadri has been up and down but he definitely put in his time in the AHL
- Arctic_AARDVARK

He missed almost all of last season. Letting him continue to eat up big minutes, refine his skill set and build his confidence in junior is probably the best thing for him long term. And don't forget he still has yet to play at the professional level. He needs to do some time with the Marlies before he should be truly considered for the Leafs. All this talk of him being put in a position to "Get a good look" is just more typical Burke blowing hot air. Put him in a position to succeed and progress at a reasonable pace instead of throwing him into a pressure cooker which has been a losing environment since the time he started puberty. Remember who the last D man the Leafs drafted at 5th overall was? How many games did he play with the Marlies and how did that turn out?

I'm not comparing the two; you asked who they've rushed to the NHL and Schenn is an example. I don't disagree he was a bad pick but like I said, playing him as a teenager was dumb.

Yup.
But at the time...he was better than what we had......how sad does that sound.

Thank you!

I can't see how anyone can argue with this rationale.

No.
Unless the Leafs unload a lot of the D they currently have.
He wont be a consistent NHLer until the following year.

- Fakepartofme

The top 6 defensemen the Leafs have will be the 6 they go with. Murray will be on the Bluejackets, Reinhart has a chance to make the Isles.. And Rielly will spend time with the big club.

He might get 9 games but with Holzer and Ranger (once signed to NHL contract), I doubt he stays. Rielly will probably be traded to another WHL club after the new year.

No problemo. Just makes sense to me. He sure seems pretty good, although I haven't seen a lot of him personally. But I don't think he'll benefit from playing small minutes against much larger, stronger and experienced competition at this stage of his development. He could get a shot at the handful of games they allow youngsters to play before being sent back down, although if there is a shortened season this year it may be risky to play anyone but your top guys from start to finish barring injuries.

I don't think there will be NHL hockey this year, and if there was i would like to see him only for 1 or 2 games at the end of the season. Moose jaw won't make the playoffs, if anything Rielly will burn himself out trying to carry the team to success. I understand the logic behind not wanting him to be thrust into a high pressure environment, but some guys can handle it, some cant. Doesnt matter if you are 18 or 33.

I don't think there will be NHL hockey this year either although now I'm less certain and upgrading to cautiously pessimistic

If there is though, he would get a look at the end of the year if they were out of contention for a playoff spot again. You have to hope he's the kind of guy to thrive in the spotlight and I guess there is only one way to really find out. I still think it would be best for him to get his feet wet as a pro with the Marlies. If he can do anything close to what Schultz or Faulk are doing then the Leafs will have the beginnings of one of the most mobile D corps in the league with him, Gardiner and the experience of Liles.

PS. Nice avatar Mr. Bohannon. Is there some sort of hold up for season 3?

Maybe they need forwards more than d though, with Corbett, Reinhart, Musil and (lol) Keegan Lowe.

All I know is I want to see him on a team where he doesn't have to do it all himself.

He has more mobility than Percy and Finn, also has offensive capabilities, I rate him higher than Finn and Percy, also in the mix is Granberg, Gunnarsson is still young enough to be in the group, can't rush them, they need a couple of years with the Marlies.

not rushing is key.

the red wing way.

i say we follow that suit, its worked very well for them, for many years.

example: Brendan Smith.
