That's a tough thing to debate. For instance, based on your statement, while Tahitian culture has a particular musical history and no real sporting history to speak of - they still consider hawking a sport-of-sorts.

The definition of sport is what varies for one group to the next.

Sport can be defined as anything that humans find amusing. If that's your definition of sport, then almost anything can be a sport. If you're talking about sports like hockey, soccer, football etc., it's a different story.

Just because something is competitive, doesn't make it a sport. People are competitive in office jobs. Doesn't make it a sport in the same way hockey is a sport.
