Yeah... Oilers couldn't sign anyone before they started rebuilding and stockpiling talent.
- robin_steele264

But based on the logic they are still not winning and therefore cannot sign players.

I think that big names demanding out during winning times hurts them.

I guess you're right. It was moreso about money.. In saying that, Burn is right. Players go where the money is.

Pronger being the only one.

And like I said, everyone has their own motivations. His was his family.

Mike Augello: Will Burke Survive Till His Next Anniversary?
- mikeinbuffalo

Burke should be fired based on his FA signings and not attaining the goals he clearly set out.
However, he shouldn't be fired because he has made some good moves and our prospect cupboard is actually looking decent.
What happens within the frist 6 months of a new CBA being reached will determine Burkes fate.
Overall, I like him, so I hope he's not fired anytime soon. He just needs to make better use of his FA money.

These players most likely wouldnt be Leafs if the Kessel deal wasnt made.

- jbold

Hard to say either way...some still might have been.
But having Seguin in the line up over Kessel the past two years.....would it have made a huge difference in the results?
I dont feel that it would have.

Actually, not true and you are wrong;

On the money side of the equation the current CBA did the Oilers a huge favour in the Schultz sweepstakes. First because of the restrictions on entry level contracts it put them on a level playing field with everyone else meaning that Tambellini, no matter how hard he tried, couldn't shoot himself in the foot with this deal. Secondly because the CBA outlines the minimum requirements for every bonus choosing a team where he would be instantly guaranteed ice time gives Schultz the best chance of capitalizing on the $2.85M available to him.

The ten "A" bonus that Schultz can reach are as follows:

Top four among defence in ice time, aggregate or per game
10 goals
25 assists
40 points
0.49 points per game
Top three on the defence in plus/minus
Top two in blocked shots
Getting named to the All-Rookie team
Making the All-Star game

Well considering kessel has been the more productive over that period it certainly would.

Lupul Seguin JVR

Mac Grabo Kul

Frattin Bozak Kadri

Brown Steckel Mcclement

Gunner Phaneuf

Rielly Hamilton

Liles Gardiner

ex: franson

Worst possible thing to do is trade 2 unknown first rounders without the season done..

...

- Mapleleafs_91

Lupul without Kessel, 40 point JVR.
Not exactly the most exciting wingers for a 1st line.

The definition of not great but not horrible describes one word perfectly; mediocre. For a franchise that is supposedly worth 1 billion dollars, that's not anywhere near good enough.
- Two_For_Truth

How on earth did you expect Burke to build a winner in 4 years after the poop that he inherited? And not trading for Kessel wouldn't have us in any better of a position...

Personally im happy we didnt get brad richards. But im upset we didnt get mike richards. We had the deal on the table of i believe kadri and kulemin along the lines for richards? And im sure we would of got carter later on as well. So that was one thing gone!

The kessel trade is a toss up but boston won that trade. The choice of kadri you cant be mad at. Kadri was one of the best selections to take, and its not all up to Burke, he gets advice as well on who to pick which influences his decision.

And money is money your correct, but when we signed komi, komi was a good player remember that. Connolly signing i wanted to kill burke

- Mapleleafs_91

How can you say that Boston won that trade?
Hamilton hasn't played a game in the NHL yet...and in two seasons Seguin has played 155games with 40goals, 49assists, 89points...Kessel over that same period has 164games with 69goals, 77assists, 146points...

Ok whatever. Guess he went there for the huge contract the Oilers could offer.

Wouldn't it make more sense to compare Kessels first two seasons to Seguins first two?

I don't think it'll be as favorable for Kessel.
