look at it this way
i'm the owner and i say i must have this or no hockey
so long as i hold my ground there is nothing the union can do
i dont have to be right.
and as for decertification... that would be the dumbest move the union could try and pull... 2/5ths of the league would probably fold leaving 120-140 guys out of work entirely. - Dozzer
How can you prove that the league is a monopoly when there are something like 200 guys playing in Europe, earning money. It's a bluff....nothing else |

If the team continues to suck, how many more people will show up because they're now in Brooklyn? And if the lease they've signed hands over a chunk of non-gate, in-arena revenues that the Isles generate without them getting a corresponding share back when the Nets play, do they really gain anything as a result?
That's why I'd like to hear details of the lease the team signed. That signals what the long-term prospects might be. - Irish Blues
The Islanders have had a problem of bringing in good free agents because of where they have been from. Since the Barclay's Center is a few minutes from Manhattan, the Islanders should be able to attract better talent to play there. Also, they have a good farm system that should develop by the time they get to Brooklyn. |

forbes list is always such a crock
the market will determine what the value is, not a magazine. imagine if the leafs asked for a bilion dollars and used the forbes mag as a reference. oooookay.
always such an overrated and overly-referenced list

Do that and hockey in North America will become a smalltown beer league. |

My gut tells me that the lease the Islanders signed to play in Brooklyn was much better than they had on LI... |

It's a two way street. They need each other. So have a partnership and come to an agreement, and work out a deal. Or stay in a lockout. And have both sides continue to bleed money. |

Sure it's about fault. When the Owners want the players to foot the bill for the problems with the League financially. - MJL
No it's not. This isn't a court case where one side is going to be awarded damages based on who was at fault. Are the owners asking the players to pay back the money they lost during the last CBA? No.
The focus should be on how to fix it going forward. If the expenses are growing faster than revenue under the previous CBA framework then the framework needs to be adjusted. |

this is where i think you are wrong
the players need the owners
the owners dont need the players.
sure they would love to see their asset flourish (that being the teams) but they do not rely on the money generated by these clubs as their primary source of income. this is why the owners dont actually NEED hockey, from a business standpoint of course.
the owners dont need anything.. so long as they dont mind being the bad guy shutting the league down (which obviously they are okay with) then there is nothing the players can do. |

If its a partnership then the players have to take some of the financial risk.
They won't.
It's not a partnership, "it's the owners league and the players will play when they tell them to".

This just in: The NHL teeters on the brink of collapse as major owners of original six and other big markets threaten to leave the league as they grow impatient. |

it's the only numbers that fans and the media have access to, maybe it's not accurate to the cent, but it is a good waypoint.
But back to the Leafs, forbes based the team value of the leafs on their most recent sale, so saying they are not worth a billion dollars is little off base seeing as they just sold for that. |
