I don't know why any of us pick sides. These jokers waited until, what, a month before the old CBA expired to even begin discussions on a new CBA? Everyone knew what the owners would be pushing for. Obviously this wasn't going to be solved in a month, and they only sat down and actually met a couple of times during that month. Does it sound like either side was really trying to avoid a lockout, or does it sound like both sides were angling for a lockout to use it as leverage?

I've read in various places that the league was open to discussions a lot sooner, but Fehr wasn't. I don't know if that's the case, but if it is, the players share an awful lot of blame for the lockout.

I wish it was all that easy.

BTW.. no one would be giving back money they already received... they would get less money in their paychecks.. from the day the CBA is signed... not on money already paid.

I worded it wrong but you get the picture. Another issue and its just as important. There has to be a new agreement among the owners. I cant believe it takes only 8 owners to deny any new deal that is presented to them. Out of 30 teams all you need is 8 owners to negate any offer. This has to change. The top grossing teams in the NHL have a major advantage and leaves 22 other teams powerless. So much for majority vote!!! Smaller teams need to get the cap locked to a reasonable number to be competitive. Regardless if the owners have other ventures to have a business consistently loose money is no good for anyone. Yah you can argue its a right off with taxes but eventually the money will dry up or the teams will be forced to sell and who would purchase a consistent money looser. There is a big gap in revenue stream from small market teams to the top eight. There has to be balance and profit sharing or else the nhl will constantly move teams to chase the money and try to attract new owners. The owners need to take a stand against there peers. Small market teams are still loosing money paying leases regardless if the team is plying or not. Big money teams can afford it.

both sides are a bunch of shmucks.

i have no problem that either side wants to make money; my problem is their ignorance and thinking they can walk all over the fans. i feel like im being patronized, both sides are thinking "OF COURSE the fans will be back once an agreement is made and we decide to play"....(frank) em all!!! bunch of bumholes!

no no no.. they accepted that PART of the contract.... there is more then 1 issue in a contract.. they came back with their offer which was dramatically diffrent then the owners... accept for that 1 point.

I realize this. My main point is the players have conceded a significant amount of money. I know there are more issues but it seems (not necessarily true ) that the owners could be more willing to make a deal..

I am siding with the players on one particular issue. The roll back on players salaries on current contracts. How can you call them contracts anymore? If both sides agreed to a prices, and length of a contract how can the owners demand to tell a contract player to give back money. This effects the agents also because they would have to return money too. Honor the contracts you agreed to or don't sign the player. All owners have to sign off on all contracts signed. The top Eight teams that spend to the max and give out DP contacts all realize they are making a mistake and want to take back as much cap room and pay as they can. If the players agree to rollback contracts how can they be called contracts anymore? I don' care who gets paid what or how much, an agreement is an agreement. This is the GM responsibility to be smart about spending. Also the tiered payment to players saying they can only make a certain amount in a given time takes away all the players bargaining power and thus top players who deserve top money will be limited to what they can earn. I do agree with the cut down of the length of contracts , with contract being no longer than 6 years and rookie contract extended a year. Honor the contracts you signed and have a locked in 50/50 split on revenue over a certain number of profits and give each team an amnesty buyout and lock the cap at a max 60 mill and low 42 mill for ten years and drop the puck. if teams are over the cap, allow them three seasons to get under the cap max and create a level playing field.

Totally agree. Sign a contract play it out at your best, same for owners, sign a contract, pay the full amount.
