I haven't watched Kelfbom play other than the WJC but Brodin looked a lot better and I don't understand how people have Klefbom ahead of him in a lot of prospect articles. Who know's though. He's got the tools.

The issue Rutt had with you is that you spew the same tripe that has been heard over and over.

"Edm won't be able to afford their players."

They have 7 mil in space right now. So with the current cap ceiling there is room.

Figure the Goalie Money is set up, Khabby is out but another takes his place and the money stays about the same.

Defense. Whitney is up at the end of the year, and will get about the same, 4 mil. Sutton is done, Peckham is done. Smid gets a raise (he'll take Souray's payoff of 1.5mil). At worst Edm is down a Dman, but saving 3.5 mil. Bring another kid up for much less. JSchultz is making 3.75 mil now and is under contract for another year. Figures he makes the same after, if not slightly more (see the 3.5.). Add to this that they have 8 Dmen signed and can eliminate ( or just not bring up) a contract is need be.

Forwards. Hemsky has one more year and Nuge is up at the same, I smell a contract shift. Yak is 2 more after this one, Horc is up at the same time, definite contract shift there. Gagner is up after this year and this is an important year for him to proven his worth. The Hordichuk and Petrell are up and expendable, replaced by Some of the OKC crew at similar numbers, if not cheaper. Eager is gone after next year, Belanger the same, again Bottom 6 guys that are replaceable by cheaper younger players. Jones is a guy that is up this year and I hope to get him signed again at a similar number. Plus Edm has 14 forwards signed, they can drop a contract, just like with Defense.

All told The Oil are keeping the same numbers they have right now (if not getting lower in a short term). The Cap Ceiling will drop. Sure, but they are far enough below that it is not an issue for a few years. Just as important is the fact they have their full team signed.

So go to the Bruins, Canucks, Sharks blog and tell them they are in trouble due to too many contracts and not enough Cap space.

I wasn't referring to the Oilers under the current cap, because the current cap will be non-existent soon. Ebs, Hall, Nuge, Yak at 6 per is $24M and if Schultz makes as smooth of a transition to the NHL as he has in the AHL then you can't assume that his salary wil remain where it is now. I'm not saying he will get 1.5 pts/gm in the NHL because that's ludacris but if he comes in at 50-70 points he's going to make more than his current salary and if he is a star in the NHL he can figure to get 5+ per. That's almost $30M in 5 players without a star goalie salary. If Dubnyk pans out like every Oiler fan religiouly believes then he will get a raise from his salary. Maybe it's the same old sh!t that people spew in here, but you guys constantly assume the cap wil be $70M every season when that isunrealistic. Can the NHL continue to grow? Sure they can but its growth will be slowed if not stalled because of the lockout. If you have $30M gone to 5 players with say a $58M cap you're really tightening the tie. The Oilers have big core of supertalented players and if they all pan out to what they're projected to be then Edmonton will have a tough time keeping them all. It's not a shot at Oilers fans to say that you have expensive talent, I don't know why you guys get so defensive. Anyone who doesn't want to blow every Oiler player gets called a troll, or gets their posts reported.

These threads get trolled a lot. Hard to blame them.

Also, while you say "dont assume the cap will stay the same", I say, "dont assume that the contracts of guys like Khabibulin and Horcoff and Whitney will be around forever." Contracts get signed, but others end. Food for thought.

I didn't include those contracts in the $30M. That number was Ebs Nuge, Hall, Yak and Schultz on the idea they become what is expected. You can't have superstars and not pay them.

Richard Cloutier: Top 20 Oilers Prospects
- Maxbone

Prospect blogs are hard and you've done an admirable job. It's tricky to compare competing metrics - The "high ceiling" prospect vs. the "safe bet" prospect. For example, you've taken the safe bet - and it makes sense given the organization's need for toughness - in ranking Harti above PRV. However, If Hartikainen's "potential" is a 2nd line forward, there is nothing to suggest that Paajarvi's is not a 1st liner.

Indeed, this blog seems part prospect evaluation, part prediction on who will win oiler's jobs, and part "who will win the spot of the oilers follow my advice, load the team up with rookies, dump Smyth and Horcoff ASAP and none of them suffer growing pains". Nothing wrong with any of those, but there's little bumps in the logic as it passes from one thesis to the other (Harti and PRV, as an example).

I've always had a soft spot for Marincin - he's was an absolute beanpole when he was drafted (6'4", 175), and thus was rated a D in likelihood to reach potential by HF. Result: He was discounted by the majority of the public before he even showed his stuff. Now that he's gained 20 pounds and (according to the Barons website) actually grown an inch, he looks like more of a diamond in the rough. I have a certain begrudging admiration to the bumholes who eschew international courtesy and get themselves suspended at the world juniors, and in that respect, Marincin is a grade A bumhole.

I think it's widely believe that 1-2 of them will be traded once they can maximize their value. Ship them off for huge futures and start the prospect pool again.

Seguin ahead of Hall..

- Feeling_Glucky

If I were a Boston fan, and saw that Seguin was ranked below a guy who has missed a quarter of the last two seasons to injury while his team floundered, I'd be furious. Everything we've seen from these players over the past two seasons should suggest that at this juncture Seguin is ahead of Hall.
That being said a) Ahead of? Who cares? Tavares and Stamkos are ahead of Seguin, Doughty and it hasn't helped either of their teams match the success of those guys. b) I'll take "losses" in the individual rankings - we've got 3 guys in the top 25 and another in the top 50.

That list is a little screwy. Obviously Eberle goes higher. So does Landeskog I’d say. Tyler Myers too. Duchene maybe a little. Bogosian, Couturier and Carlson way up.

I’d drop Tavares, OEL a little, Fowler a lot, Justin Faulk a LOT, O’Reilly a little, Hedman quite a bit. The rest, not bad I guess.

Clearly, however, Pronman must be trolling. Because, Oiler fans have tried to tell me that if an Oiler prospect is rated below anyone else, it must be trolling, and there is no way Seguin could be rated higher than Hall, and that Hall, Yakupov, and Nugent, are all better than Crosby, Malkin, and Ovechkin, and Mackinnon is nothing special, the Oilers got the best three players in at least 50 years.

Simspson's a wienerhead.

Paajarvi will be Pj Axelsson

I remember when the Oilers were supposed to cut Dubnyk and Kubhabibualaiubn because Roy and Bunz were plenty good enough.

The Oil Kings this year are a disaster in their own zone and their rush play isn't the same as last year.

Laughs is a pissbucket

- DTF69

A guy that scores 30ish points while leading the forward corps in PK time, blocked shots and takeaways? sounds awesome, but more likely to be Hartikainen frankly.

but seriously. It's like saying that Crosby has been a better player than Giroux over the last two years. Well that's a little hyperbolic, but you get my point.

Overall, is Seguin a decidedly better player than Hall? I don't think so. But that's a different question.

Not trying to nitpick, but I could see why someone would maybe put Doughty ahead of Tavares, but I certainly don't think you'd "drop" him in those rankings. I think it's pretty fair where he's ranked

I would put Doughty and Seguin above him, potentially Nugent-Hopkins, but they're close. Eberle should be right up in the lower end of that range too. Pretty close to Tavares. Landeskog could catch them pretty quickly too.

I'm not a big Tavares fan. I've said it since day one, I don't think you'll ever see a completely elite player out of him. No Hart trophies, or Richard trophies, or anything like that. I don't think he has it in him. Don't get me wrong, he's good. But not top of the league type good.
