This is true and it doesnt just apply to the fact that Burke has refused to hand out ridiculous contracts (cue Komiserik jokes but in 2009 it looked brilliant and Komi could have gone to 29 other teams, all who would have given out that contract) But Burke has authored a remarkably patient rebuild. He could have at any time in the last three years sold off youth for short term gain and at least made the playoffs. He has a massively rabid and suprisingly low information fan basing calling him a total failure on a daily basis (common belief among Leaf fans is that Burkes out if he misses the playoffs again; however I think hes here as long as he wants the job) and equally bizare you have people calling for a "proper rebuild" whatever that is (and ask WPG and NYI how thats working out) even though all draft picks are risky and Burke has added 4 top ten draft picks from other teams all in their early to mid twenties (JVR, Kessel, Lupul, Phaneuf) thats a number 2 overall, a 5, a 7 and a 9) to go with Kadri and Rielly (7,5) thats six top ten draft picks all 28 or under who are all going to be above average players. DOes anyone honestly think that if Burke just drafted high for six years he would get anywhere close to the quality and consistancy of those six players? SO, the rebuild is going great. The team is on the rise, Burkes job has been inpeccable because you can't rebuild a team in less then five years, no matter how you do it.

This is why its hard to be a Leafs fan. The Leafs are under the cap, they currently have no one to spend any extra money they would have if they got it. They are the richest franchise in the nhl. Lombardi and Connolly will both have to work like hell to even make the team and otherwise their contracts aren't going to count anyways. They will be waived then demoted. Certainly both of them won't make the team. As for Komiserik, why would you buy him out? He doesnt earn his contract but if he's on your bottom pairing then you have one of the leagues best bottom pair defencemen. Outside of maybe 5 teams, the bottom pair of Dmen on teams are terrible and are way worse than Komiserik who is nine times the player most Leaf fans give him credit for being.
