Besides, Its fairly easy to make a 70-game schedule.
5 intradivisional games(2road, 3 home for half and vice versa for half): 5x4= 20
2 intraconferencial games(1 road and 1 home against each) 2x10=20
1 game against each opposing conference teams(home/road 50/50) 1x30=30
Not so difficult 70-game schedual and pretty easy for cpu to make after inputting parameters. Its not even unbalanced as u have 50/50 road-home game ratio. I really dont see your problem JDJ. - orion1981
That's not what I mean by "it's difficult to put together a schedule." I didn't even mean "it's difficult to throw it into a computer and have it spit out a schedule." I meant "take that schedule generated and start making arrangements so that travel, lodging, etc. are ready to go for the first 5-7 games."
Again, in 1995 there was already a schedule in place and teams had some warning ahead of time. Teams are nowhere close to that point right now. Getting those 5-7 games (or more) taken care of won't happen between 9am and 5pm the first day after the schedule is released, and with arenas having the ability to book events 30 days out, availability may have changed from what was originally submitted.
This is like talking about ____'s chances in (insert state here) on Tuesday: I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying it's not very likely.
Making a new schedule takes what? 1 day? The next day the people within the organizations that are paid to make travel arrangements do their jobs, like they are supposed to. The players are under contract with their NHL teams so they are well aware that when a new CBA is cut they are to return back to their respective posts, unless they're Russian then they can apparently do whatever they feel like.
It's not out of the question to start a reduced season quickly, if what Ek suggests actually happens. - trolleytracks
You have buildings already booked for other events, schedule will need to be such that most of the games will be within the conference. 1 day?
Computers cannot do everything people...

You mean computers won't book transports (flights/buses), hotels, practice facilities on the road? technology sucks!

No, but in the future they'll become self-aware and realize we're a threat to them and in self-defense, .... no, wait - that's just some science-fiction plot from a movie. Scratch all that.

Also in 1995 I think some NHL arena's had fewer tenants. For example the Forum in L.A. had the Lakers and Kings, Staples has Kings, Clippers and Lakers, and like an event every night..
I think Stars, Hawks, Avs, NY Rangers, Kings, Bruins, Flyers, will also need to deal with basketball schedules, along with other things. Kings for example will need to be on the road in Feb. due to music awards..
It can be done, but its not as easy as some try to make it out to be.

you think you can make a brand new schedule for 2000 plus games in a day?
Keeping it balanced and scheduling around all the other events that have been booked months in advance, ya keep smoking what ek is smoking

An 82-game schedule is 1,230 games. A 70-game schedule would only be 1,050 games.
Putting together that schedule in a day? Absolutely doable if both sides agree to let a computer do it and accept the results that come out or make very minimal changes. Setting up initial travel arrangements for the first handful of games? No, that's not going to happen in a day.

my bad on the amount of games i simply multiplied the games by the teams when it should be half of that.
But a computer is not going to take balance into consideration.
When the lockout started the NHL told arenas that they could book there arenas a month in advance of the latest locked out day, and they did that knowing that no matter when they came to an agreement they would take a month from that day to get organized and ready to start the season.
as soon as a deal is announced you can expect the season to start a month at the latest and maybe 2 weeks if they really want to rush things.

They are being treated like rockstars right now in order to entice them to stay.
But after a year they will remember what it is like to play for the mafia and will want to come back.
Wasn't it OV that snuck out of russia in the middle of the night to escape the team that owned his rights?
