I just don't understand all the fans that are dumping on the league....Isn't it the owners that own the risk here. shouldn't they have the right to want the bigger piece of the pie? Of course they are all making a fortune. If I was an owner I would want to make a huge profit too. these players kill me wanting even a piece of the hockey related revenue. their job is to play hockey....play goal, score goals, pound the opponent, defend the net etc etc.....they are paid a salary for doing that. if the salary is not enough then go work for the city, or be a cop or nurse or accountant.
My boss owns a business. I work for him. he pays me to do the work i do. thats it. if he profits year to year related to my work or my co-workers work then good for him, thats why he hired us all. If I knock on his door tomorrow and say listen you did good last year, I want more money..he would say go play in the NHL, thats the only business you can do that kind of crap!!!! Players make me sick!!! P - Nolanders
The money to pay the players salaries comes from HRR. That's what the players share of revenue is. Their salaries. I think your badly misunderstanding what is going on. The players share of Hockey related revenue last year was 1.83 Billion.

As expected...no big shock here.

The difference is that you aren't a top worldwide talent in a big money profession. No offense.
if you want to fix the problem move Phoenix to Quebec , move Columbus to Seattle, move Florida to Hamilton, the islanders might do alright in their new home, if not the NHL could even consider contraction of 2 teams. that gets rid of the black hole teams, and revenue sharing plus the lower cap should be enough to save the fringe teams like Carolina, Nashville, Dallas. - ky678468
Great idea. Now tell me who's going to contribute the hundreds of millions of dollars needed to relocate Columbus and Florida and then contract 2 teams - because the owners of the teams moved aren't footing that bill because the league says "move" and the owners of the teams contracted aren't voluntarily taking a zero on their investment because the league says "get out."
Then tell me what you do with teams in the future when they get into trouble - especially if that team happens to be in an area that "deserves to have a hockey team."
Then tell me how likely it is that state and local governments offer to put up tens and hundreds of millions of dollars in new arenas and infrastructure improvements if teams can just pick up and move on a moment's notice because the league in charge says to do so.

There's obviously a bunch of factors that many overlook in terms of contraction and relocation.
There's some talk the Classic could be revived for a later date? Like January 1, 2014? When are they going to play this game, in March???
I trust the mainstream media more than hockeybuzz. Bob McClown and Glen Healy say the season is likely going to be cancelled. Most of the owners are livid with Fehr and the players and they will now try to crush the NHLPA.
What does the Winter Classic and the NYC Marathon have in common?
They were both cancelled today due to a disaster...
In all seriousness:
Tip of the hat to Mayor Bloomberg for making a good decision. NYC is all about rebounding with pride but 100% focus needs to be on recovery. People need to come first. NYC will always rise.
Now on to hockey - your disaster is man made. You have no hall pass. All you have is a mistake. Traditions are important - the Winter Classic was becoming a New Years Day event in my house. It was great to see the sport i love showcased with tons of leftoffs and a soft pillow. Too bad - irrogance and stupidity is getting in the way. I can understand everyone's position but there is no need to hold the game hostage (at least that is how it should be). There should be no anticipation that a proposal or idea is on the table. Bettman and Fehr should be locked into a room for a formal negotiation sesssion. This could be a 2 week process but at the end of that time - if they can't comprise - then replace them and bring in the arbitrators or officially cancel this season - end the drama. Make a decision on if you want hockey to continue this year or go away. There is too much investment into the game to play games. Real negotiation can't continue until real negotiation can take place. Trading calls and emails doesn't work. If both sides are dedicated to making a season out of it - do it for your fans. Look like you're trying. Stop holding a sport hostage - negotiate.
The NHL and the Red Wings don’t want to host a tainted Winter Classic. Nor do the Wings want to host a scaled-down version of it.
Which is why, even though the league would still have time to build up the infrastructure needed for the Jan. 1 game if there’s a collective bargaining agreement in place by Nov. 30, the Wings don’t want to be part of slapping together a half-sized version of the two-week festival it originally had in mind.
This is way more than just the actual game in Ann Arbor, Mich., between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Red Wings.
It’s also about a celebration of the game in downtown Detroit with a second outdoor ice sheet at Comerica Park hosting an Ontario Hockey League doubleheader, an AHL game, two Leafs-Wings alumni games and other youth hockey games. It’s about more than a quarter-million fans turning through the turnstiles in both stadiums among all the events the league and Wings had planned.
It’s about the legacy that Wings owner Mike Ilitch wanted to leave behind with this event. The Wings under his helm have been the model franchise in the NHL for two-plus decades. They had plans to raise the bar on an already through-the-roof event.
It was going to be the best Winter Classic ever.
Ilitch and the Wings want it done right, not hurriedly cobbled together a month from now when perhaps there’s a new CBA with zero opportunity to have promoted it since Sept. 15 when the lockout sucked the life out of the event.
While the Wings may never admit it publicly, Friday’s cancellation was likely a moment of relief. If the NHL is back next season in full form, its labor troubles behind it, there will be a game at the Big House between the Leafs and Red Wings, plus the kind of festival of events at Comerica that the Wings wanted all along.
We’re all just going to have to wait one year longer for it.
But when it comes to Friday’s cancellation of the Winter Classic, it was the right move, and the only move.
This season is going to be a sham either way. Let’s not denigrate the Winter Classic with it.
That picture doesn't make any sense. Where do we gauge it? Where the stick intercepts the line? Where it's pointing? Wasn't it before like a radio dial that actually made sense...well as much as possible here.

They can try to skate themselves for all the players care. The owners need the players just as badly as the players need the owners (hockey, not other businesses they run).

So they will crush the NHLPA by making a big concession????
From Dreger on twitter: The NHL's verbal offer to absorb some or all of Make Whole was made Tuesday. 3 days ago?? PA wants more detail before getting too excited.
Are you f'ing kidding me? They have waited 3 days and want more details?

Well I did predict the owners would give a little and the players would have to respond accordingly.
I really hope Fehr doesn't think he smells blood again... he might try to sell the PA on the fact that they held firm and got another concession, the problem is that the concessions are probably not coming fast enough to net the players more money (compared to salary lost).
If they are smart, they will take this deal or try to negotiate off of it at least. They can't keep going to the well before it dries up.
... how many of us have known for how long how to resolve the differences. This is retarded.

Allan Walsh @walsha
NHL reiterated what it said when it walked out 10 days ago. Nothing new, except NHL using its media sponsor to deflect.
Allan Walsh @walsha
Report of a "major concession" by NHL is false. Nothing new. Just trying to deflect anger from Winter Classic cancellation.
Allan Walsh @walsha
The media leak on Make Whole is Frank Luntz Part 2. We've seen this before. Devil is in the details, not media mouthpiece for NHL.
Allan Walsh @walsha
On day when NHL is getting roasted in national media, they leak to their sponsor in the media about "major concession" on Make Whole.
Allan Walsh @walsha
Why would the NHL walk out after 10 minutes with 3 NHLPA proposals on the table but now they want to discuss "Make Whole". Is this a game?

Just sign it. - Winterland
No, they shouldn't just sign it. But they should absolutely get together to find out the exact details.
