And more importantly, who cares?

The Winter Classic is a great promotional tool for the NHL in the US. I'm siding with McGrump from Minny on this one - Canadians need to get over it. They don't need it - TV ratings are already strong.

Sadly, I think this also will mean nothing. I get why the NHL Is doing it financially, and from the perspective of removing a "threat" from the bargaining table.

The thing is, Fehr will say he knew this was coming all along and somehow the players will assume they should follow him... because he knew it.

The real reasons likely have to more to do with logistics, specifically things like HBO.

I do think it is fair to cancel the Winter Classic ASAP, for those folks who had made plans to travel to the game from further away. If done sooner, perhaps people can either get their cash back or get some kind of credit vouchers.

Yeah, they will be pissed it is cancelled, but it dies give those people a higher likelihood of recouping most of their cash.

Didn't someone else post that the NHL pays a fixed 100,000 penalty (or lost deposit) if they cancel by Friday, but after that it will cost them more to back out?

hey, I am just talking about how great the game is. if canceling the Winter Classic means getting things going I would have cancelled it day 1.

Was just trying to say that without the rest of the regular season, it's not quite as intriguing. Even if they were start this season off with the Classic, it would lose much of it's luster IMO without the first few months of build up leading into it....

Because I think a workable deal with the players is there, that would work for everyone.. or all but a few. Whether those few franchises should even exist is a whole 'nother question.

At this point, the divide seems to me to be much more about ego than about finances.
