The players want to push for a second cancelled season in 8 years because they think the owners/league will cave before that ever happens. The ones not choosing to play elsewhere also don't mind the time off. Its like free vacation/rest for the body.

I'm willing to bet 70% of players don't give a (frank) right now.

As much as you'd like to convince yourself that success in the NHL is as likely as a coin toss, it's not that simple.
- Two_For_Truth

Nor is failure....... It's not surprising that you criticize him for doing something that you are doing, just in the opposite direction.

Riemer hasn't been worse longer than he has been good (even disregarding the injury). It's about equal, which is why it's too early to tell either way.

Yeah, except I believe there is something truth to him and Carlyle not working all that well together.

Losing him for nothing would be a disaster.

If this thing plays out like it's shaping up to, there's a good chance of that happening. Despite what Lupul says publicly, I don't think him and Randy get along that well.

I never said Lupul. You seem to think 30 years old is pushing retirement when the fact is age really doesn't tell the whole story. A 35 year old can easily be in better shape than a 25 year old. You want to trade Lupul because he is pushing 30 is just ridiculous, especially when this team is dying for leadership and mentors.
- PootieTang

It is a tough call, but I look back at McCabe and Tucker. I wanted the Leafs to trade both because they were at their PEAK VALUE and the Leafs were NOT CLOSE TO CONTENDING. How well did re-signing them work out?

You add those things up, and you have some fair motivation, if the return is very good, to trade Lupul; if we get a new CBA.

My hesitation is that I think you want to keep Kessel and this makes that more difficult. Also, Lupul is only like 27. He could have 4-5 more quite good years left that might be enough so that he is around just as the team is starting to hope to win a playoff round...

He hasn't played that much for him. And he said that it's over. The reason for Lupul not liking RC was because he said he couldn't play LW so he dropped him down to fill #3RW. Turns out he can do it very well if given a chance, and RC apologized for that and admitted his mistake.

Lupul is UFA in summer 2013. With no NHL season there is no way they can trade him. NO one is going to give up anything (let alone UG's 1st+a prospect - just to start) for a guy that is UFA in 2 month.

... unless they think they can resign him.

and if we have a CBA and a shortened season, there will still be a trade deadline. He would be a pretty valuable piece I would think.

If there is any type of shortened season with a deadline, then yeah. I do not see anyone trading for him in the summer of 2013 like 2 months before UFA if he hasn't played in over a year.

Ya I remember hearing Lupul say in an interview that it was in the past and it's over, but you know how that goes. Anyways, JL finally found some chemistry with someone, Kessel. He'll probably think long and hard about leaving that situation, but money talks should he become a UFA.

Oh, you forgot one part in your rant, the best way is to keep your 1st round picks, especially in big drafts such as the one that will happen in 2013.

If we were politicians, you'd be the NDP and I would be the Liberal Party. PS. do you not work tomorrow? (frank), i gots to go to bed soon, its almost 2!

So what happens if Lupul Getzlaf and Perry are all FA's ... do the Leafs have the cash to sign all 3... I doubt it.

It would sure make me think twice about trading for Luongo if I am Burke though.

He will want to cash in on a long term deal....he needs to cash in on his last season with Kessel.

I actually wouldn't be surprised to see him sign a one-year deal with some team, to prove that it wasn't a one-off season.

That would be extremely risky on his part, and probably not advisable from his agent.

The lockout is a blessing for the Leafs. They get great lottery pick odds without having to actually lose all year long. That's a great deal. I couldn't care less about weak, Southern American markets. As Ivan Drago once said, if they die, they die.

If the Leafs are drafting 1st, 2nd or 3rd overall, uh, yeah, it's beneficial to the Leafs. And if the price tag is a lockout, bring on the lockout.

- Two_For_Truth

Those contracts would be off the books at the end of the year whether they were playing or not playing. Just because they're not playing hockey doesnt' mean the Leafs aren't bad, they're still bad...sorry to brake it to you. The lockout is not good for anyone!

Financially they are probably losing the most, which is not good.

the point was, at seasons end, after a lockout, the leafs will be in the best position of any team to make their team better moving forward.
top three pick and tons of cap room.

...but thanks for 'breaking it me', I didn't realize the lockout was a bad thing.

It was tongue in cheek. And regardless of the lockout, they'd still be in that position.
