Here is what I'll say. I grew up playing a lot of basketball. The best team player I ever saw was Magic Johnson, in that he could move the defense to create passing lanes. His exceptinal skill wasn't that he could just move his defender, but also defenders of his teamates. Then he was a sensational passer on top.

Giroux reminds me of that type of exceptional player. He can move his defenders, and create space/openings for his teamates. With incredible passing. You can't take anything away from players like Crosby, Malkin, Weber or even Chara. I just think G excels in a different way than those guys, and in a way I appreciate. I hope that makes sense.

He needs to do it consistantly over several years and have a few outstanding years to be considered one of the elite of the game, and he needs to do that over his career to be compared to a hall of famer. Crosby and Malkin dont even get that kind of comparisons. Until then Giroux is a Flyer that had a solid yr. Nothing more, nothing less.

Hurricanes suck. I went to college in eastern NC and went through my fair share. But nothing like this. I live in CO now and im glad I dont have to worry about those anymore. Forest fires, different story.

I don't know if it is the severity of the storm or just that the area has higher population without the planning / knowledge base to plan for this type of thing.

NYC wasn't built for these type of storms, that is certain.

Well that explains why you know nothing about hockey. You're a basketball kid.

And a basketball fan who is taking Magic over Jordan at that.....

Pass and move defenses all you want, but when the game is on the line I would want the ball in Jordan's hands and nobody else.

Excellent article Gunner. Lots of 3rd and 4th liners/5th and 6th defensmen stand to lose the most. Can't get time back.

Like most, I felt bad for the union because the initial offer from the league was nothing short of ridiculous. But the last offer was a return to sanity and the union pretty much laughed at that offer too.

My two cents... As someone who spent time in a union, the NHLPA is not a real union. For instance, if you have players negotiating their own contracts based on their performance.... Let me tell you, that's called "performance pay" and that is "the devil" in a real union. In a real union, you don't have large disparities in income.

Also, the most annoying thing to me is the players stealing jobs over seas. If the roles were reversed and the NHL decided to bring in replacement players, those guys coming over here would be called scabs and vilified in the worst way.

Thank you.

I dont believe they can because they have locked out the players as opposed to the players going on strike. I could be wrong.

I think it would be an absolute disaster for the NHL if they brought in replacement players.

I dont think they can, at least not right now.

The more time ticks off the clock, the more $ the players will never recover again. They are losing, even when they think they are winning.

Im of the opinion that the NHLPA had this planned all along. Fehr didnt want to meet until last minute, I think he wanted to take the NHL to brinkmanship and now its become a pissing match. Watching the players bail to Europe is a joke like you said. You want a union to protect your job, well you just stole someone elses. I dont know how much Euro teams pay but I imagine its not nearly as much and the cost of living in Europe is not cheap at all. I think Lidstrom retired knowing there most likely wouldnt be a WC. As a guy that lives in Detroit he knows how epic the big house would have been for a finale in his career. Even at 42 he still was a top 10 maybe 5 dman. Detroit will still be strong next yr too.

Yeah, I don't know how that would work considering they don't have a contract with the NHLPA. For instance, I don't know if you have to honer a contract that you've signed with an individual if he's chosen to be represented by a larger entity.

I would be shocked if the contracts signed with individual players doesn't have a "subject to" clause that stipulates the validity of the contract is based upon the broader contract signed by the league and the NHLPA.

I too think it would be a disaster if the league tried bringing in replacement players. I really don't think it will get that far. The players will ultimately break 'cause like your article says, they have the most to lose.

Tough to say anything bad about Jordan, so I won't. Completely different player than Magic. And both the best at their position.

But not surprised my point went completely without notice.

Regardless, I have been to over 200 NHL games in my life but perhaps I was only drinking and checking out the girls.

Your point was not missed. You analogize Giroux to Magic to which I pulled out Jordan. Magic was great and one of the best ever, but still he was not Jordan. We can do football examples if you want. Big Ben and Eli are great Qb's, but they are not Brady, Brees or Peyton. Back to hockey; Giroux is great at a lot of things, but he is not Crosby or Malkin. Starting to get the picture?

You think by calling Giroux #1 and Crosby/Malkin #2/#3 that you are stirring a debate similar to when people argue over Lemieux v Gretzky, while in reality you are stirring a debate more akin to Lemieux v Lafontaine. It isnt even close.

Also, being in Italy I can't help but to think what would happen if the 'football' clubs locked out the players here. Absolute bedlam would ensue amongst the fans. Maybe we need to start rioting Vancouver style in all the major cities to get our point across. A burning rink is much more of a statement than an unread email. You guys should get on that, I'll help when I get back- with rioting, not bail.
