Link? Although I wouldn't consider being outside the top 10 amongst the most profitable teams. You made it sound like they are top 5.

They have no one else to blame but the owners themselves.
- Ben37

In a business where success is measured in wins and losses not $$$ GMs and owners do need protection from them selves.
No contract demonstrates this more than the Shea Weber one. Agents and players Know this and exploit it to the fullest.

I love how you name some teams that have, at times, been among the most profitable teams in the league, as well as some of the most successful on the ice.

Some people on this site can be so f*&king stupid sometimes.

- prock

Come on prock you're smart enough to know that 90% of the stuff written on here is for chits and giggles. Of the teams on that list, realistically only Florida and Phoenix could be considered for relocation.

Dallas is a great hockey town with a now rich Canadian owner, they'll get back to where they were before the past owner got into financial trouble.

Unfortunately, most profitable in the league does not necessarily mean "wildly profitable".

Change Tampa to Buffalo and make appropriate tweaks, and you also describe the Sabres ... and yet, no one is crying about getting rid of them. If an owner wants to lose millions each year, what business is it of the fans to complain?

Re: Phoenix - the franchise has been doomed ever since Balsillie talked Moyes into dragging the team into bankruptcy with the express intent of moving the team. At that point, no prospective owner and no amount of on-ice success was going to be able to save the team, because "... and they may move for next season" was going to be perpetually hanging over the team. Fans and businesses don't plunk down huge money to see a team that's about to exit stage right. Anhyone who thinks kicking out 3 more teams in the name of "avenging the Southern expansion" will make the league more stable may want to look around at how stable other sports leagues have been when they started dropping/relocating teams on a semi-regular basis. (Hint: start with the WFL, USFL, and WHA.)

Which team has an owner richer than Oprah?

Oh, right. Buffalo.

They just switched hands. Again.

I went in there before one time, and the whole place stank of moth balls. They were filling the urinals up with moth balls instead of urinal pucks and the entire place stank of them.

You may want to take Ben Eager out of your potential lineup for the next, oh, let's say up to 14 years:

Aggravated assault is a serious charge.

On a couple of occasions, I've peered in the window and looked at the menu.

It's bloody expensive.

No reason to go there over McSorley's, Duff's or Originals.

And I miss the Boar and Firkin...

Is true to a point...and you are valid in what you say, but a nitpick...

Phx and CBJ lost OVER 10mil this last year...CBJ lost 13.7, Phx over 20.

Every other team of the 18 lost 8.5 or less.

Shift the 7% and the losses are minimal (< 2mil each) for those 16 teams that would still be losing money.

- OilHorse

Definitely... Good point. I was just going by last year's numbers. You're 100% correct though... The numbers should be better than what I posted once a new CBA is in place. Either way though, eliminating teams would be a mistake. Relocation is the answer

I’m not convinced anything will survive there. They’ve had quite a few places fail there, and part of that is just that there is too much established competition in the neighbourhood. I haven’t been in there since it changed hands, but the way it was run by the prior owners, there is no way they’ll ever get the business back.

They also don’t seem very good at marketing to their target audience. McSorley’s and Originals both get huge family crowds, and in Leaside, that’s a huge part of your target market. They really don’t have anything for mom’s and dad’s coming in with their kids for some wings.

Honestly, it wouldn’t take much for me to start going to a place like that, if it was decent. There I’m not a fan of McSorley’s food. The burgers are pretty good, but otherwise, meh. Everyone likes those wings. I don’t. Originals is decent food, but I find it ridiculously expensive. I went in there with some friends, and we figured it out, and went to Vero’s for breakfast about a week later…. Same price. Where would you rather eat? Duff’s is good though.

Where was the Boar and Firken?

For breakfast or a decent pub meal, I don’t mind the Longest Yard over on Mt. Pleasant. At maybe Manor?

Oh, oh OHHHHH. The Amsterdam Brewery moves in on Laird on November 1 by the way. I’ve heard they have a brew pub opening in the area somewhere too. That brewery is open to the public almost 24/7. They open on holidays, open till 11. It's awesome.

Move two and contract by two. You could probably buy a couple of franchises for about $150m each and use some of the relocation fee to help pay for it

I don't think there is a set $ amount. I remember some kind of formula being tabled in the Coyotes bankruptcy hearings. You could charge a lot to whoever wants to put another team in TO

All the more reason to get the Fleshlight company off and running ASAP. Once profits start rolling in, the possibility of buying and relocating one of these money losing franchises becomes a reality.

Hmmmm that could work against the NHL. If a buyer is aware that they desperately want the team relocated, they may not get much of a relocation fee.

It doesn't matter if the Sabres lose money. He gets a loss to offset some of those oil profits as a tax writeoff.

We still have to wait and see what Katz and the city of Edmonton say about our previous proposal though. This is an exciting time for us.

We can only hope!

The NHL should go to the NHLPA and say this to them: You have 30 days to agree to our current contract offer. If you decline to put it to a vote, then we will cancel the season.

If the NHL loses this season, they should say, OK, here is your new collective bargaining agreement. If you want to play in our league, you'll abide by these rules. Then open training camp and see who shows up.

Contracts are only guaranteed after playing 41 games of the season.

A hard salary cap of $50 million dollars and a cap floor of $25 million dollars.

Totally agree, that would weed out the spoiled brats and bring hockey back the way it was meant to be. Screw the Russians who just use us and abuse us!
Maximum length of a contract will be 5 years.

There will be no signing bonuses and the contract will be distributed evenly through the length of the contract.

The maximum amount that a player can make, is $6 million dollars.

Unrestricted free agency occurs, after a player plays 10 years for their franchise.

The NHL roster will consist of 23 players.

It's time to put these greedy little ba$tards in their place.

What about giving Suckskatchewan a team? They would have to name them the Riders for it to even have a chance to work, and sure they would probably still lose some money out there. But they would still do a lot better than PHX, CBJ, Florida and Carolina.
