clouts,,,what if edmonton moves to say quebec city? they don't want to move to a place where they may not make money but THEY WILL make money in quebec.
- habsrock71

So the NHL fights tooth and nail to keep the coyotes a team losing money in phoenix, but they will just up and move a profitable franchise to Quebec city?

Sorry but that won't happen. When Quebec does get a team it will be through expansion.

2. Edmonton could build the rink itself entirely, and lease the rink to the Oilers, regardless who owns the team. This is perhaps the most straight-forward option. It's also the least predictable. I mean, come on, I've worked with governments before, and the current rink deal has already been tied up for five years in debate. If this was left up to the city entirely, when would Edmonton get a new rink? 2025? An NHL team might still be here by then, or they might be gone. By doing this publicly, you're putting the entire situation at the mercy of the economy for the next 10 years, which may or may not have the ability to float the team at Rexall until then.

If the city builds the rink itself they will still need a tenant. Which will still give Katz the upper hand.

If the NHL is dumb enough to add more teams, I hope the entire league folds.

Nah, part of the reason Pho still has a team is because the city put a lot of money towards keeping the team there. Sounds like Bettman isn't willing to turn away from cities that do that. Hence how a new city owned arena = oilers not leaving.

You watch in 8 years they'll get up and move 5-6 teams to Europe. Start a new division, then 3-4 years later they'll try plug franchises back in those cities.

Oh trust me they are dumb enough. Expansion teams pay a one time fee, this is called a cash grab for current owners.

Then complain in 5-10 years that they are sick of supporting the weaker teams

I agree with that, the problem I have is that Katz wants non-game day revenue as well and a yearly subsidy for maintenance of the facility.

This is reason enough that the costs should be somewhat shared by Katz and the City.

Well the non-game day revenue shouldn't be a shock as a lot of teams get it, plus Katz is paying whatever cost there are to run the building.

The subsidy though is a bit odd. I don't know what happened in New York with the whole Casino funding, so I don't know what to say on it.

If Katz wants revenue on everything for 11 months of the year, naming rights valued at $3 million a year, $20 million in advertising over the next 20 years, casino rights, and $6 million a year to help with operating costs, he should be paying for around 90% of the arena costs himself.

This
I get Katz wanting to make money, if he didn't he wouldn't be where he is today, but to take all those revenues and then ask the city for more money to operate the arena is just ignorant. Go (frank) yourself katz

This... The (frank)ing guy is a crook... He wants the cake, icing and ice cream for (frank) sakes... with only paying 10 cents for the $1 plate... and then I owe U 's for the remainder for 35 (frank)ing years... I mean who in their right mind would say yes to that... oh yeah and please keep 92% of the building's annual profit...
