Probably not majorly, but it doesn't mean they're going to want to just throw away money they feel they spent their lives working for.
- eichiefs9

The players are prepared for this. They're not going to have a sudden change of heart when they start missing paychecks. As if they didn't think this was serious, and they were just kidding.

“The bottom line is, if they want a hard (salary) cap, we’ll sit out for the rest of our lives."

Different players and different leadership of the Union. Not to mention different issues. Nice touch with the 2004.

Dallas and Tampa Bay are fine. The Stars biggest problem was a bankrupt owner; that's been fixed. Phoenix will probably lose less money from a cancelled season than one that's played out in full. The Islanders are probably in the same boat.

However, there's other teams that have more to lose from the season getting turfed. The answers would surprise you and many others.

- Irish Blues

Actually the Islanders would probably save money if there was no season

Same oh so brave front.

Til the cold reality of lost paycheques settled in.. so they said "Please mr. Bettman, may we please roll back our salaries by 24%"

And Mr. Bettman said, "Yes you may. Now let's talk about how this salary cap is going to work."

By the way... since 2004 has "nothing to do with this", can you explain Fehr's interview?

I interested in discussing the facts. Not imaginary made up statements. When you look at the situation and all the facts. It is clearly a different situation then in 2004.

Wait, you said 2004 has nothing to do with this.

Please explain how your statement can be true in light of the recent interview given by the head of the NHLPA.

4 marks.

Fehr has given many interviews. Which one are you referring to?

The most recent one.

Don't bother answering. I am just being mean now and I feel badly.

Provide a link, and I'll gladly explain what is being said.

The most recent interview I've read says nothing about 2004.

There was no unity to begin with.

Don't you think that more than half the NHLPA is sitting at home, knowing FOR SURE they are losing more and more every day on a short career. Don't you think they are looking back at 2004, looking at the fact that Fehr will be long gone when this is over... and asking themselves what the F they are doing?

- Aetherial

Why does the fact that some players choose to play in Euope and some choose to stay here reflect a lack of unity? Some had chicken for dinner last night, others had steak.

Let them all go to Europe and tak Fehr with them, he can negotiate a deal for them over there. Hire some replacement players and lower ticket prices and have a good old slapshot league. Cya boys,

Dude that is the same as going for 50K a year to 44K a year.
- Aetherial

Exactly. People love putting it in "real" terms. I bet if people got approached to go from 50 to 45 and had the chance to fight it without being fired they'd fight it too.

I see the players taking some type of pay cut.

Yes, what they had for dinner is equally related to the unity of the union as the disparity between employment status.

Yup, 2.4 million down to 2.1 million is the same scenario as 50K to 45K. I think it was David Backes who taught me that.

they will as long as the NHL is willing to put in place a revenue sharing system that works and that is acceptable to the top 4-5 teams that will fund it.

I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles.

The minute the season is reduced from 82 games, the players have lost.

I hope they realize this.

- Atomic Wedgie

Agreed 100%.

Players will not win this, because even if the NHL to capitulate to the NHLPA's position, that will only occur after lots of games lost (and likely the season). Too much money will have been lost on the players side - well beyond the adjustment the NHL is asking for to get to 50/50 split.

Given how few contracts go beyond 2 years remaining currently, the NHLPA is holding out for a very small minority of players rather than trying to maximize the NHL's "Make Whole" proposal for the next 2 years that could satisfy the majority of the membership.

The NHLPA is too focused on the star players, who will get more than enough money one way or another (current contract, next contract, advertising deals, etc...), rather than the regular player who is more than likely going to get screwed over in this deal (especially with games lost).

The NHL knows they will win in the end, and they are playing like they know they will win. I suspect they will never move far off the current offer and can just see it getting worse.
