I think you might be mixing rules. I don’t recall any of that over 35 stuff being mentioned in the new CBA thing about cap hits remaining with the original team upon a trade.

Now I'm confused. You wrote:

What are you talking about? If the Leafs (or any team, for that matter) would be able to trade for Luongo, without the worry of a crippling contract for several years while Luongo is on a beach enjoying his millions, they’d be willing to give up more for him, obviously

Guys, no personal attacks on the blogger, Leaf posters you are guests here, if you don't like the blog, leave, if you stay to comment be respectful.

To everyone, no insulting posters.

- LeafMan

Then again... Ian had to see it coming after going in the Leafs blog saying he just wrote something about Luongo.

This being said, you're right! Let's stay respectful! It is (was) only hockey!

No offense but we're guests on a blog who's title is "Why would Lu want to be a Leaf?". That title is intentionally titled and the blog written to entice Leafs fans to read it and post. In no way am I meaning to insult the blogger, but by all means his blog is written to insult Leafs fans.

really?

if he retires before the end of the contract the hit goes back to vancouver... and this has nothing to do with age.. it applies to any contract longer than 5 years in length.

I'm sorry, my debating of the issue and the blog is not meant to come off as sounding defensive. It's my feeling that if you want to write a blog then you should be available to answer it. I'll leave it alone.

Very true! You could change Lu's name for any other player and it would still be a valid question!

Yes - big new consideration for the Canucks.

But how does this change anything for any team looking to acquire Luongo?

Honestly Leafs mods, I have not taken exception to anything that has been said as of yet.

On a side, how great is to have a message board with interaction again.

Love it so far. Keep it up and keep it clean.

Why Would Lu want To Be a Leaf?

It's almost as if you don't remember writing this exact same blog many many times this summer.

I will say that this lockout has helped Vancouver in their goaltending situation: animosity/unrest can't arise in the locker room if no one's in the locker room. Plus, once the lockout ends this year teams that get off to slow starts will be desperate to try to turn it around. I think this plays into Vancouver's favour.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if both Vancouver and Toronto fans get a worse deal than they were expecting. And I certainly won't be surprised when both fan groups spin it as if they won the deal.

reports are false

From tsn.ca

" Even with the NHL lockout in one of its darkest days yet, there's no shortage of trade rumours - particularly regarding Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo.

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis told TSN on Friday that all the rumours on the web and on Twitter this week of Luongo going to the Toronto Maple Leafs are "not true."

The league's lockout rules prohibit discussions between teams on player transactions, but Gillis admits he did have several serious discussions with teams prior to the lockout and that as many as five teams remain in the mix from those pre-lockout talks.

Many still believe Luongo's former team the Florida Panthers are the frontrunners and if a new collective bargaining agreement includes the freedom for teams to retain salary in trades, it may encourage the Canucks to take back a more expensive player as part of a package.

Luongo was displaced by Cory Schneider as Vancouver's starting goaltender in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs as they bowed 4-1 to the eventual champion Los Angeles Kings. The Canucks subsequently signed Schneider to a new three-year, $12 million contract.

Luongo, who still has 10 years left on his 12-year, $64 million deal, said in the week leading up to the start of the lockut that the Canucks had not asked him to submit a list of preferred teams and he will wait until Gillis had a deal for him to consider. "

Gillis is a pretty good source imo.

I don't think he'd be the first GM to lie to the media about a trade, but let's hope you're right. I'd rather not give up Lupul.
