precisely.. that would cover the inflation of operating costs

The TV contract is worth $200 million per season......... or 6.67 million per team, so then basically its a $10 million dollar per season outage for the owners. Still worth cancelling an entire year over??

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.............. last time was the real battle. Salary cap.

They don't right now, because the team sucks.

But when the Leafs are winning, there isn't a better place in the world to play.

I've said it before, I'll type it again: the Leafs need to get good before they can get great. Make the playoffs, steal a round, and have upcoming UFAs take notice of the hockey madness in the town.

- Atomic Wedgie

its been 10 years since we had any success in the playoffs.. 10 (frank)ing years!

There will be 2 CBA's since then, the league has changed, players will chose to play elsewhere even if the leafs stole a playoff round.

NBC pays out the contract and the NHL would have to pay them back at the end of the deal for missed games

NBC pressure doesnt really hit home til 2021

and CBC?!

the NHL knows damn well they will come back.. HNIC is their only reputable program lol

You have JVR Kadri Gardiner Franson Frattin Biggs . How many more good young players do you need?

Look at the oilers they have tanked the last 5 years and still are 5 years away from making some noise.

You need experience to accompany the youth .

A lot better than that list.

This contract will be the mother of all albatross contracts in less than 3 years. Worst move. It will possibly buy BB a playoff spot so he can keep his job for a year but the contract making things inflexible will bury him in the long run. UNLESS, he gets his wish and the long term deals issue is why it won't happen till after CBA announcement. If Loungo's deal becomes 5 years it's not such a bad idea and keeps them competitive between the pipes, again as long as the contract length gets retracted. I am a little wary on the line of how this could negatively impact on available ice time for the younger guys, but he may help them along as well.

If the leafs were to acquire Luongo, that is not a start "Build around", its a way to try to stay in the middle of the pack and hope for playoffs. 35 year old players are not what you start with anymore.

If Getzlaf and Perry are the targets, I would think Burke would help in luring them to Toronto.

Big name Free agents do not want to come here anymore, why would they when all teams are offering the same money for much less pressure. Its not like the 90's anymore where Toronto can outspend everyone. Minnesota and Nashville are signing 100 million dollar contracts too.

- senstroll

You said it yourself .Players don't want to go there. The reason for that is mostly to do with their playoff record over the last 8 years. Most NHL free agents want a chance to win. Lu will give you that.

I would agree with that, the Leafs have some good young guys but very few blue chippers like say the Oilers do. Who's the last Leaf to put up 50+ points in a year as an 18 year old like RNH did?

Oops - that should have been a 5 not an 8

I just really, really hope that we don't trade Carton Ashton for Luongo.

He's going to be a superstar.

He looked pretty darned good in a Leafs uniform last year - I know his point totals were a little low, but he only played 15 games.

He's one to hold onto.

Don't let Scooby or LeftCoaster or VanTel know about him - I'd hate for them to figure out he's the real guy they want in this trade.

Shhhhhhhhh!

They either want a chance at the cup or a huge overpayment. Two things Burke hasn't been able to provide.

This

The NHLPA know this and this is why they are now playing hardball

- VANTEL

However the NHL came back from 2004-2005 better than ever so it's possible a year off may have little effect. The TV deals will be extended for a year if there is no season and the TV companies are owned by people who own NHL teams.

Eberle wasn't 18 though.

Still the point remains I guess, I'm just nitpicking useless details. Edmonton has quite a few top end prospects. Toronto has one with Rielly (hopefully). That's about it.
