name 17 billionaires.. ?

most franchises are owned by ownership groups.

but to answer your question.. there's been probably what, 3 legitimate billionaires who tried to purchase the coyotes over the last 5 years? and all backed out, due to being forced to keep the team in the desert?

Just out of what I found quickly...there were very few ownership groups and most owners who didn't make the billion mark were only worth a mere 700-900 million.

Most guys on the list were worth at least 3 billion...with only a couple worth less than that david Thompson and Jeff Vinik were the richest worth 22 and 13 billion respectively.

I feel sorry for the owners though...why have a business if it's not making money? I think if the league can't profit 1.5 billion/year it's not even worth having it...unless of course you treat it like a sport that you love and enjoy. Personally it would not surprise me to find out that the NHL influences playoff results to try and profit more

you're just another chump swinging off the back of the nhl pr machine.

i personally know a couple of brandon prusts. they're both playing in the ahl, making a quarter of what they normally make, and are 100% on board with the union and planting their feet this time around. look at it however you want..

it's owners who sign the checks fella, do you think a player agent walks into a gm's office drafts up his own players contract, and signs it off? there's a sense of responsibility that comes with shipping out the dollars.

the owners as a group had once chance to twist arms and force into place the economic system they wanted this generation of players to play under, and if we're to take the nhl and people like you seriously, they blew it. if the nhl made 3 billion in revenues last season, and didn't make any money off of it, they (frank)ed up...? making the (frank) up the players to correct isn't going to fly, because without that group of players they're lucky if their revenues break 1 billion last season.

- joel878

so, you admit to having horses in this race but i'm the one drinking the Kool-Aid?

and do i think agents walk into owners' offices with drafted player contracts? for guys like Parise, Suter, Richards? no, i don't that. i know that's how it happens. i think that was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt with the Brad Richards signing in 2011.

you really think owners are the ones who devised these cap-circumventing measures? you're not that stupid. i can tell you're not. so i don't know why you believe that.

No actually they have another chance.... right now. Players continue to talk about 57%. Its over, gone, done with and is not coming back. They better start to learn that right now they are making 0 % of revenue.... not 43 not 50 and not 57. Stop living in the past. I agree owners are stupid, sign dumb contracts, needs deals like this to protect them from themselves. But the fact of the matter is those contracts are only good if you have a CBA in place. Owners knew it when the signed players, which is why Eberle, Hall were signed... They new if they could sign them for 6-7 million that maybe once the new CBA was retified they would only pay 5-6. Slimely thing to do, but if players were dumb enough to sign contract based on what they were worth in July and not think forward two months then tough crap. Should have had more discussion with the slime ball agents to figure out what they were worth... then tack 15% on top knowing they would lose that once the new cba came into place.

Players will never win this fight. and I also don't think they are as unified as you may lead us to believe. They will fracture, all unions always do.

i can promise you that not a single owner has made his fortune off of or relies on his fortune from his NHL team. there are no George Steinbrenners in hockey. the owners can go without hockey much, much longer than the players. it's why the players will cave in a year, like they did last time. but they'll feel good about themselves for having lost so much more than they should have based on principle. a smart, smart bunch these players are.

So if they are not in it too make profits then why do they own teams. Love of the game???? If that was true then a lockout would be their last resort not the first one. They could have played under the old cba and negotiated a new one.
I don't think they are truly honest about the money they profit, the books are cooked by very good accountants. Either that or they don't love hockey. I don't care either way, don't make a difference. Fact of the matter is, this ain't good for hockey and I hope fans (frank) them when the lockout ends

George Steinbrenner owned a shipping company that was making over $100mm a year in the late 1960's. He bought the Yankees for less than $9mm in the early 1970's. He turned a franchise that had been foundering for a decade into a $3bn enterprise, including their own cable network. One thing George NEVER did was try to squeeze profits out of his players. Instead, he made the team successful no matter the cost and came up with creative marketing ideas to expand the Yankees brand to other markets and other countries. He brought Yankees baseball to England, Taiwan, Japan, and much of the world. The Yankees logo is one of the most recognized in all of professional sports. He was everything these mindless NHL owners are not.

Agreed. As much as people hate the Yankees for "buying championships", you have to remember that they weren't always the Yankees they are today.

At one time, the Mets were much bigger. The Yankees weren't the biggest draw in New York baseball, let alone all pro sports.

Steinbrenner invested in the team and the quality of the product. He put his money on the line and worked to grow the business by recognizing that he could spend money AND make money.

I still hate the Yankees, but you've got to respect them.

I seriously doubt that Ed Snider is a Billionaire. And owning a sports team isn't just about yearly profits. It's about the growth of the worth of the franchise. That's where the real money is.

If jordan eberle got traded tomo to the carolina hurricanes, he'd probably still be my favourite player. But i certainly wouldnt start cheerin for the canes.

Its the jersey, not the player. Id still be an oiler fan if it was full of AHL players.( in the end 2010 with all those injuries, that wasnt actually far from reality)
I can certainly be interested in a team i wouldnt normally be because of a player. But my fav team still trumps that by a mile.

Imo, anyone who cheers for the player over the jersey of his home team prob isnt much more than a casual fan. Which is fine, but just sayin

I've been watching hockey for 30 years, players come and go, but the CH is always there.
Yes I get attached to certain players through the years, but when they quit/leave/traded I find a new favorite player.

Feel sorry certainly isnt my first sentiment.
But i still feel like the playets are petulant children completely out of touch with reality.

As far as the 'love of the game', i think thats just it.
Its a hobby. It has to be. Alot of These guys lose millions every year.
If it was there main source of income theyd be fuked

Thought about it a little more and in fact ur thoughts are closer to reality than mine.

Smyth was my absolute fav for a long time. By his second season away, i hardly even paid attention to what he was doin anymore

As far as eberle, i Got alotta luv for that gap toothed little snipe, but he wouldnt look nearly as good to me in any other jersey. Might be the same deal as smyth if he was elsewhere

But I doubt that all but the very most hardcore fans would shell out any money for a vastly inferior product.

My wife had the worst luck, every time she chose a player he'd get traded/left the following year I think it happened 2 or 3 years in a row.

I started asking her to like Gomez

As bad as Gomez may be, he's still an NHLer. An amateur isn't going to put butts in the seats and move merchandise.

Maybe in the hottest markets, the effects would be less. But if you think American arenas are empty now...

Wow. Just watched the pressers by both Bettman and Fehr. The season is toast. At least it looks that way for now. Not sure how anybody can have optimism after what happened today.
What both sides have been doing so far is throwing proposals at each other. There hasn't been any real talks so far, including today. It's definitely time to start a bullpoop meter against the optimism meter.
