Salo is past his prime but he still is a very usable Dman that controls the flow of the game. He will bring experience that will help Hedman. We are sad to see him go but it was time for Canucks to get younger bigger stronger.
Well respected player. |

Absolutely agree. It was time for Salo and Vancouver to part ways, but he can still be a really useful guy in the league, especially on a team like the Lightning. I remember when the Canucks acquired him from Ottawa for Schaefer; what a steal that turned out to be.
Not only is Salo an effective player, but as you point out, he is a respected player also. He's truly one of the good guys in the league and I look forward to seeing him in Lightning blue (despite the fairly hefty contract...). |

Gillis finally commented on Edler's injury. Confirmation on Garrison as well.

COACH’S CORNER:
Here’s a progress report from Chicago Wolves coach Scott Arniel on two other players high on the Vancouver Canucks radar — centre Jordan Schroeder and defenceman Chris Tanev:
On Schroeder, who had two goals in a 3-1 preseason win over Milwaukee, and his coming off a 21-goal AHL season: “We always knew he had speed, but he scored two beautiful goals and has a great shot. It’s just the maturity around the room and you can really see that he’s grown up and is starting to fill out his body. He’s been strong on face-offs and we’e used him in a penalty killing role and is one of those dynamic players who when he uses his skill set, is hard to play against.”
On Tanev, who will be paired with Kevin Connauton on Saturday: “Some players you watch and some you can see aren’t quite ready yet to play at the NHL level. Tanev is ready to go. He’s polished and smooth and little things that defencemen have to do, he does. He’s got good feet and has good vision and you can tell that he just has that one extra step that other guys here [AHL} don’t have.”

Gillis commented on how much Schroeder has improved. They seem very high on him right now. He said he's becoming the player they thought he would be when they drafted him...Also Kassian is in "Canucks" shape now. I don't know what kind of ship they run in Buffalo but it clearly lacks a veteran leadership. He apparently is skating very well. |

I think Kassian and Hodgson both use the same conditioning trainer in the off season so my guess is the Sabres are getting in better shape both physically and mentally now.
I was surprised Kassian didnt get any points in the preseason. He must of only played a game or two being a lock for the roster.

I wish Kassian the best in Vancouver. Seeing him play live was a treat(especially the fight against Martin). He has the potential to be like Lucic, however he did look a little slow and sometimes lazy here in Buffalo. Reading that he's gotten into better shape is definitely a good sign. I think the trade is gonna work out for both teams in the long run. |

They weren't ready to win it all, shutting down Strassberg lead to this, who knows if the Nats will ever get back to the post-season and have this good of a shot again. |

The problem with the Salo contract is the same one with the Ohlund contract. It's too long and too rich for what they bring at this stage of their careers. Are they both guys I'd love on my team (and did)? Absolutely. But they aren't in their prime any more and the contracts they got basically pay them to be at the top of their game. Not great salary cap management, especially for a team that has had problems being so top heavy in the very recent past. Still, good for those guys. I'd take the money too. |
