In Ron Macleans book, called Cornered.
He talked about Cherry.
Cherry was once in Montreal, in the 90's, with Ron, and he refused to get into a taxi because it was made in Russia. He told Ron to call for another taxi..
His reasoning? Because " These people see me as the guy who loves Canada. I can't be seen in a Russian car, it will make me look bad" (Something along those lines).
It goes to show, that Cherry says things, and does things, just to play into his character..
Another story from that book, is Don Cherry was RIPPING on Dan Carcillo, calling him a rat and saying he's a no good player.
Next week, Cherry and Ron were walking past the dressing rooms, Carcillo, on the exercise bike, simply said "Hey Don, Ron, how's it going?"
From that point on, Cherry hasn't said a bad word about him.
Cherry isn't the type of guy to say he's wrong, and hates looking like a fool because of it.
He'll stick to his point, no matter if it's wrong. That's the type of person Cherry is.
He's always supported Kadri. If Kadri was a bust, didnt do ANYTHING, the first goal he scored with a new club, no matter how bad he was doing, Don Cherry would point it out and say something stupid like "Hey, they ya go, good ol' ontaria boy Kadri. Leafs made a mistake with that kid I tell ya" - jbold
Don (frank)ing owns, and hes right about kadri. Leafs management is (frank)ed and i like how he calls out the coaches, burke, and everyone of the leafs because of how much we suck and that yes burke gets his americans but he also drafted all Canadians, mostly.

Dramatic? Nope! Realistic. Burke believed that the Ponikorvky's, Stajans and Ian White's could catapult his team into the playoffs, if he added another 30 goals. He also believed Tomas Kaberle was an allstar defenceman too. When push came to shove, he was mistaken on all counts. His choice of UFA's have been suspect as well. Since he arrived, he hasn't shored up his goaltending and his center ice position. They are woefully still not corrected, 5 years into his so called quick rebuild. Kessel is a very good goal scorer. Is he Captain material? Nope? Is he a leader on the ice, using dogged determination to drive to the net or backcheck? Nope. He's average, outside of his goal scoring ability. He added a player without adding a backup plan and filling his critical needs. This is why the Leafs Nation have issues with this regime. - PrinceLH
Kessel can pass quite well. Just saying. Not many players are captain material. Is OV? Nope, i'd still take him. |

Cherry is a tired old fossil but he's correct in this situation...

I dont understand how people can still deny the Kessel trade was a very large mistake.
we now have the benefit of seeing the trade 4 years later. Nothing has improved, the same holes we had then we have now. The 3 players we should have gotten would go much farther now in helping the team become a playoff team than 1 Kessel ever will.
Not to mention, if we didnt have Kessel, I am sure our 9th pick in 2011 would have been a little better. We could have Seguin and Couturier/Scheifele/Strome as a potential tandem down the middle. At that point where we are set a Center, then add the mostly 1 dimensional sniper via Free agency or trade that doesn't involve a lottery pick.
Do we miss hockey yet?

Should have just made the original offer of the 1st rounder (Kadri) + Kaberle for Kessel

Eakins is probably holding Kadri up to her standard which, really, is not fair on Nazem. |
