Nor am I, which is fortunate as my budget isn't a fan of it either.

All this budget talk is making me thirsty. I could go for a pint about now! I believe octoberfest is still in session

What if player salaries go up tenfold again, and the average team salary is $700M? I’m guessing ticket prices would go to about $2000 a seat, for the cheap seats, no one would buy them, teams wouldn’t be able to pay player salaries, and salaries would drop precipitously again. Unless of course there were enough people to pay that kind of money, and then the salaries would stay at that level, and the league would operate like it does today, just with higher salaried players.

Supply and demand. You sure you understand what capitalism is?

- prock

Supply and demand. Like the housing market in the US. The bubble bursts it does just come down gentle like you suggest ticket prices will.

If kids don't get to see games live and on TV - Some teams are starting pay per view they wont have any interest and wont be able to give the tix away when they grow up.

I love the game, I hate the greed! But its everywhere!

My kid is grown up so he pays for his own ticket.

Where will the all of sports be in 10-20 years if ticket prices and salaries continue to rise like they are?

Seriously are we going to have to pay $3000 a ticket in 20 years

I paid $ 11 a seat for Flyers seasons in 90-91 10 rows behind the net. In 20 years they have to be at least $100 now. I don't know cause I dont live there anymore but its not out of the question.

So in 2030 are they going to be $1000 a seat ? I think it will be a little empty in there.

That why the ACC looks so dead the only ones that can afford the platnums or golds don't give a poo about the game.

- mantosh

Pretty sure I covered this already.

Again, you sure you understand capitalism and free markets? I’m guess you’re not employed as an economist.

Also makes no sense that those same people complain about the bloated salaries the players make while continuing to support the sport and the league by watching and going to games. Quite puzzling.

Where did I say anything about it coming down “gentle”. I’m guessing, aside from not being an economist, you don’t quite understand what the word “precipitously” means.

You really don’t seem to follow this at all. If teams can’t give away tickets because the prices are too high…. According to supply and demand, what do you suppose might happen? If teams can’t sell their tickets at $2000 a seat, do you think they’ll just say “screw it, can’t sell em, leave the place empty and toss em in the trash. Hopefully it doesn’t get worse next year when we hike it to $3000”.

Do you understand what happened with US housing market? You’re aware that demand was artificially inflated, aren’t you? What do you feel is going to artificially inflate demand for NHL ticket prices?

I just wish the false optimism would stop. I know I don't have to visit the site blah blah blah but to think that this guy knows any more than TSN or what have you is ridiculous. At best he is being played by one his "sources" to serve their agenda when it comes to public opinion.

At least then when they finally sort this out I would be pleasantly surprised instead of constantly disappointed.

Meanwhile, I've really gotten into the NFL. And it is on 4 nights a week now which my wife finds to be a much better balance as opposed to hockey every night. Even bought Madden 13 instead of NHL 13. I suggest you all do the same ... maybe one day the NHL will get it. There's reasons why they're on the bottom rung of the 4 major sports (not to mention below many other sports as well) in North America. Lockouts and labour disputes may just be one of those reasons.

I love hockey. Don't get me wrong. Not a fairweather fan. Glad my beer league starts up this week. But fool me once NHL ... heck they fooled me three times now, won't be a 4th.

I thought as much. Like a hibernating bear I am once again awakening, but to my dismay it is not yet spring.. Err hockey season, yet.

I look forward to conversing with you and the other wise acres of the interweb!

We just need to get skip back on a regular basis and we'll be derailing threads in no time (kind of like right now!)

Just like the good ole' days. The flyers thread looks like the FARG lately. Empty.

I think I need to start following Carchidi and Panaccio again for some much needed comic relief.

I really don't have a problem with this but I assume you are a college student or recently graduated. Very good use of the English language. This is a "Hockey" site those words should not be allowed. I am trying to do this and program at the same time so forgive me

You dont seem to know how the real world works.

When there is a demand they raise prices.
When the demand is low they raise prices cause they are not selling as much.
Finally when people wont pay the high prices they cut down on quality and lower the prices and people think they got a great deal on a Chineese kids toys that has 9 layers of lead paint on it!

I apologize for being negative but this lockout stuff makes me sick. It ticks me off that the owners are rich beyond most people wildest imagination and the player are playing a GAME for millions of dollars and they cant figure out how to split their billions between the 2 groups

ALL Penn State athletics should be done away with after what was going on there for years and the AD was hiding it.

- mantosh

I disagree.

The Athletic Director should be beaten to death.

If "Papa Joe" was still alive, he should be beaten to death.

But I feel sorry for all the student athletes, who through absolutely no fault of their own, are being punished and tarnished through all of this.

Ah, yes, the working class hero act - I knew it was going to rear its ugly head sooner or later.

Hockey in Canada is predominantly a middle class sport.

Those guys in suits? They are much more likely to be hockey players than the guy sitting in his apartment at home, watching the game.

Don't you think it would be cool if the ACC looked like the Joe in Detroit where the people close to the ice actually care.

Do you sit in the lower bowl? In 2001-2003 I did a few times paid about $150 a seat. Tickets were freakin' AWESOME. That when US dollar was worth abou $1.50 can so it was little expensive but not crazy. Now I think those same seats have almost doubled.

The few times I sat there most of the suits could care less about the game. They were there with a client and didn't pay out of their own pockets so it didn't matter to them. My son and I were going nuts the one game Domi fought Worrel about 15 feet from us it was cool and all the suits shot us a look like we were from another planet. My son who was about 10 at the time got yelled at for banging on the glass. WE WERE AT A HOCKEY GAME!!!

I have only been there for Leafs and Flames games so you may be right.

At the start of each period they are all empty and they make as much noise as 10 moms do at any 8 year old game at 6AM on a Sunday morning

It's a middle class sport in the US too.

Part of the reason it isn't popular in the US is that many parts of the country don't have the climate, naturally or economically, that is favorable for the sport.

disagree. it's more of an upper class sport and the reason it's not more popular is that it is too expensive to play.

absolutely. to get the ice time and quality coaching needed to really excel, it's going to cost you. i mean come on. there's plenty of winter weather in the US.
