"Not sure where we go from here We have done everything we can think of to engage the PA and invite them into a negotiation." - Bill Daly - Pecafan Fan

I just don't get the whole concept of the PA and the lockout. I could understand if they were fighting for future generations of PA members, but trying to keep their existing deals and allowing future cuts seems greedy.
How about this? All existing contracts over the NHL average are reduced by a certain amount (increasing as the numbers get crazier). That way the players who get paid less won't take a hit.
But going back to the initial statement, saying we'll take a pay cut, but gradually reduce our percentage... isn't that just saying "screw future players, as long as we make more than them"?
I have no grudge against the PA. My main hope is that both sides sign a CBA longer than 6 years. That's what the fans want out of this. They don't care who gets what cut of the pie, just that we don't have to deal with this BS again in the near future. |

"The NHL is intrigued by rumours..." So no proposals have been made, but the NHL is hearing rumours about a proposal? How does that even happen, let alone get reported?
John Doe: "Mr. Daly, I heard the NHLPA is willing to go down to 50%"
Daly: "Hmmm, intriguing."
John Doe (2 minutes later): "Hey Ek, I started this rumour that the NHLPA will go to 50% and Daly said he was intrigued by it. Thought you should know."

They had agreed to 50/50 but the League retracted the offer when the players ordered off the a la carte menu |

it was the careful wording to avoid having to explain that this didnt actually happen.
'they heard a rumour of a possible offer that might scale the players salaries back'
of course the nhl would be interested if it were true!!!

Both sides have drawn a line in the sand. The players are willing to take a lesser future share of the pie. But aren't willing to take a paycut on current deals. And I don't blame them. They did that last time, where did it get them? |

Heres my oversimplification of whats going on.
The NHLPA is trying to sell the NHL an Apple.
The NHLPA starts off by trying to sell it for 50 cents.
NHL: Nope we want it for 25 or we don't want it.
NHLPA: Ok well how about 50 cents.
NHL: Ok Im listening.
NHLPA: wow you drive a hard bargain, uhhmmm hows 50 cents sound.
NHL: DEAL! |

Playing devil's advocate here... For those of you who remember the NBA lockout last fall. In November it was all gloom and doom, people were talking about the season starting in February and a lot of them were saying there would be no season at all. Then the next morning while listening to the radio I found out that the deal had been made to start the season on Christmas Day. Everything seemed to have happened virtually overnight. I remember how surprised I was... Does anybody think something similar is possible in the NHL right now? |

Thing is, NHL wants oranges, not apples. The PA keeps offering apples and keeps telling the league that apples are better than oranges. |

You clearly haven't been reading things here.
The correct answer is that the players are greedy bastards who are making too much money and (frank)ing beautiful women for playng a game that we all wish we could play better.
The owners are taking all the risks and so should be able to set wages unilaterallty |

No because as much as I hate the NBA, the media and general public love it. When the NBA, NFL, and MLB go on strike there is pressure put upon the leagues and player unions to get a deal done. When the NHL goes on strike no one cares outside of a small few. Therefore without any media pressure the NHL and NHLPA can string these lockouts on without anyone getting in their face. |
