Didn't ESPN just pick the 89 Flames as the greatest team of all time? they had a few good players - flashfire
Frankly, I dont take anything ESPN has to say about hockey too seriously...Ive read too much garbage from them in the past. |

If all you're looking at is GAA & save %, you're missing the point, Reggie played in an era where goals were way up, nobody was getting sub 2.50 GAAs. You try and play net for 8 games against the 80's Oilers. He's 4th all time in wins and 3rd all time in playoff wins for the flames. Kipper and Vernon are clearly 1-2, but Reggie's at least 3rd or 4th best all time.
Sorry guys, I originally had a write up for Lemelin but had to shave a few from the list to keep it short. Reason for removing Lemelin was his numbers. As shown below in my write up, his best numbers...well....werent that great. If you guys still think he should be added, let me know and I will do my best to edit the blog and fit him in.
Thanks.
Rejean Lemelin – 31
Lemelin was acquired by the Flames in 1980 after the franchise relocated to Calgary. Lemelin would play seven seasons with the Flames before being lost to the Boston Bruins in 1987 via free agency. Lemelin and the Flames would make the playoffs every year despite only succeeding past the 1st round once. Holds franchise record for season most goals allowed
Best season with the Flames – 56gp 30W 12L GAA 3.46 SV% .888 - Colin Dambrauskas

No one gives a poop about #3 and #4. This is about the best 2 goalies. |

You're certainly right my friend...and I did take it into account. Perhaps I put it together a little too quick this morning and should have thought that one over a little more as I did a quick comparison, and while his numbers were a little higher than a few other names of that era, they were still very respectable...all things considered.
But again, this roster is ultimately up to you guys, so if you feel he deserves to be in the list I can add him. But if he'll end up 3rd-4th on the list, no real point I guess. |

Im still working on it...and there are some good names on these lists
...its actually difficult to keep the lists short, but I want to give you guys a good selection. There will be 6 defenders to choose and Im currently sitting at 24 possible players ....going to try to get it closer to 20. |

The Flames will have a solid team for sure. I'd take their all time team over the Nucks all time anyday. - doon
Agreed. Not much to write home about over the last decade but in the 80's some real good players spent time in Cowtown. |

Then throw in some guys like Iggy and Kipper and they are fricken scary. What a great battle of Alberta that would make. Steve Smith spent time with them, they can take him. |

ya ummmm is wamsley like 80 years old then? he was drafted in 79 not 70 and anyone saying espn produces garbage cannot be taken too seriously if they are "writing" on hockeybuzz. |

Yeah...I figured out my oversight on this one...I used my previous write ups from the "Calgary Flames Goalies and their Masks" blog...and I didnt include Lemelin in that blog because he wore a very plain mask. Didnt re-review the list closely enough it seems.
Will pay closer attention to the defenders/forwards |

This is a great distraction to the lock out though! |

A typo on my part, thanks for the correction.
And with respect to ESPN, most of what they say sounds uninformed or ignorant. I have read a lot of articles published by ESPN in the past regarding the NHL or hockey in general and have found them to poorly written or elicit misconstrued information. But that's just my opinion.
ESPN's concern with hockey is just too low, and that is the problem at the end of the day. Although they have been focusing more on hocey of late and seem to be getting better information and stories

Oh for sure because the 20 odd guys who took the Oil to the woodshed in the late 80's had no business playin in the same league. Guys like MacDonald, Gilmour, McCrimmon, Suter, Roberts, Mullen & more likely wouldn't have cracked most teams AHL rosters - scubasteve
Are u for real???Took to the woodshed??As in 5 cups to 1,that woodshed???
Look up at the rafters. The oilers were full of HHOF while the flames were mostly 2nd and third liners exception of a select few. |

The one thing the flames can hold their hat on is that they prob traded, released, gave away some great players who amazingly seemed to emerge while playing elsewhere.Do the names hull, gilmour, savard, drury, and letting macinnis and fleury leave. unfortunately it doesnt count when u give up on a player cause u didnt see the emerging talent he has. |
