I can't believe I just typed that.

Suddenly we are short of d-men with both Schenn and Franson gone.

Blacker, Ranger and others take note, the window of opportunity just opened.

Somebody needs to clarify the Franson situation. There are other NHL players who have signed in Sweden like Alex Steen and I doubt they would have done so if they're stuck there all year. There have been reports that the ban on NHL players is being appealed and is a non-factor.

The only way Franson will be in Sweden for the full year is if he signed a contract without an out-clause or if he himself has said he wants to stay in Sweden all year long.

Maple Leafs' Cody Franson commits to entire season in Sweden

Cody Franson is committed to spending an entire season in Sweden — whether the NHL lockout gets resolved or not.

The unsigned Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman agreed to a contract with Brynas on Monday.

In announcing the signing, the Swedish Elite League team made it clear that Franson would spend the entire year with them.

"It's really inspiring to come to Brynas, and stay the whole season," Franson said in a statement.

The 25-year-old defenceman is a restricted free agent who went unsigned by Toronto throughout the summer.

Franson appeared in 57 games with Toronto last season, scoring five goals and 16 assists.

Steen is under contract to the Blues.

Franson wasn't under any contract.

He's there for the year.

And I'm already over it.

I think they're both working under the assumption that the ban on NHL players signing and leaving is still going to apply. That ban on NHL players is being appealed and if it's deemed that it's not applicable in the next few days, things could change later on if and when the NHL season starts. Franson isn't the first NHL player to sign in Sweden and I doubt very highly that the other NHL players who signed there did so with the intention of staying all year long. Franson might want to stay because he doesn't have a contract with the Leafs but I don't think him staying there all year is a guarantee yet.

But his rights still belong to the Leafs as he was an RFA so if the season resumes and they sign him to the deal he wants, the only thing stopped him would be the ban on NHL players leaving but that ban is being appealed right now.

Well, currently, anybody who signs there is stuck there for the entire season. If the Leafs offered him a good enough contract, I doubt he stays the whole year.

His rights don't mean jack.

The reason other players (like Steen) would return is that the IIHF would force the SEL to respect existing contracts.

Franson doesn't have an existing contract.

In fact, if he did sign with the Leafs now, the IIHF would force the Leafs and NHL to respect the SEL contract - Franson is the Swedish team's property now for the year.

Interesting. With the flood of players getting set to move over, I wonder if that was a bit of a negotiating tactic? I’ll sign for $X for the year, on a contract with an out clause. Or I’ll sign for $2X for the year, no out clause and 1st pairing minutes. Then I’ll spend the year banging Swedish hotties and loving life.

The actual translation says that he intends to stay for the whole Alla helgons dag (or All Saints Day) season which runs through the early part of November. I am sure sure that this clause is being worked into his contract. Anyone who has enjoyed Alla helgons dag in Brynas would know that he won't want to miss that.

There has been a slowdown in the volume of signings in Europe in recent days. The volume may or may not pick up again depending on what happens with Svenska Hockeyligan's appeal of the Anti-Trust Board ruling that Elitserien's ban on temporary contracts was an illegal restraint of trade under Swedish law.

So, again, if that goes through and the Leafs sign Franson...

The Leafs only have rights over other NHL teams. While not under contract, he can sign with any team he wants outside the NHL. The Leafs have ZERO say in what he does outside of the NHL right now (and AHL for that matter though, but for different reasons).

He doesn't have a temporary contract though.

Perhaps you're missing the point of the article.

Meaning it would cost the Leafs an extra 500-750K to buy out his contract. Big deal.

But it's possible that's only because temporary contracts are currently banned but being appealed.

It's either him, Komisarek or Paul Ranger.

Yeah, it's an easy choice.

At the moment it is but if the appeal goes through, that could change.

Point is, if the Leafs put up the money that he wants, he'll be back one way or another.

And yes, it's imperative he comes back because, well, screw Komisarek.
