Few thoughts:

-Bryz was not helped a ton by his defense, but he needs to be a lot more consistent whenever next season starts. The team really seemed to pull together in March when the injuries piled up and Bryz responded in magnificent fashion. This year the distractions will not be as big, and the adjustment period should be over. Also, Bryzgalov has shown an ability to bounce back after a bad year.

-Systems can certainly help a team to victory, but they are dependent on the team executing them properly. Somebody brought up the Devils system. Yes, it was a very successful system. It also featured one of the best goalies to ever play, as well as two Hall of Fame caliber defensemen, and a bevy of other talented players that all bought into the system.

-Also, there is no new system anywhere. The neutral zone trap that the Devils used? Been used for decades in Europe. Same goes for the Left Wing lock. The 1-3-1 Guy Boucher used against the Flyers in Tampa is simply doing for sixty minutes what teams with a lead late in a game do for 10 or 15 minutes.

A good coach installs a system that fits his team's capabilities. He uses pieces from other systems to fit the personnel he has on his roster. It's not the 1970's anymore, where Reggie Leach gets traded from the California Seals to the Flyers and is stunned that Fred Shero uses a complex system.

The key to any system, especially in today's NHL is execution and adaptability.

-As for goalies aided by a system, sure, it can be a lot easier to play behind Dave Tippett's system than Peter Laviolette's. But both Mike Smith and Ilya Bryzgalov enjoyed success at the NHL level prior to playing for Tippett.

That's not to say there's no such thing as a "system" goalie, but Smith looked like he was going to be a good NHL goalie prior to concussion troubles in Tampa. Bryzgalov has the second longest shutout streak in NHL playoff history, and he did that with the Ducks.

Agree on all counts. The Trap was a system that teams in Sweden developed decades ago to counter the puck posession skating game that the Russian teams played. The Canadiens of the 70's used which is where Jacques Lemaire learned it and used it with the Devils. But your entirely correct, Hall of Fame Goalies and defenseman. And numerous quality players are why they won.

Obviously Cechmanek's fault.

When the playoffs began some blues fan was mouthing off about how elliot was great and the blues were going to win the cup, i reminded him about cechmaneks years under hitch and how well that turned out.

Players win and lose games, not systems.
- MJL

You really think its that simple?

[qoute=mjl]
Quick question. During a game when the opposition has the puck on their stick taking a shot on net, and Mike Smith has to make the save. What does the system have to do with it? [/qoute]

The system limits scoring chances, so goalies don't have to make as many tough saves. Whether or not they can make the big saves is where its up to the player.

does it? will it have updated rosters? sometimes when NHL games are first released the rosters aren't up to date and if there's a lockout will that prevent any roster updates from going out?

The rosters are fairly up to date, but need some tweaking. A lot of UFAs with former teams still

Yes it is that simple. And a system doesn't limit anything. The players on the ice do.
