Somebody's still mad he called out Bill Barber as a poopty coach

He should have tried scoring a goal instead of being a petulant little bastard.

03-04 run be damned, Brind'Amour > Primeau hands down.
- Tomahawk

I totally agree.. But there was also the thought that Brindy's career was coming to an end. The season after the trade, it was a huge win for the Flyers. Primeau put up 70+ points. The following two seasons saw Primeaus point totals drop, while Brindy was steady.. the 3rd season removed from the trade was a bad year for both.. Brindy only putting up 37 points with 12 goals, and Primeau with an injury plagued season, but Primeau had that magical playoff run.

The following year was the lockout, and I truly believe it rejuvenated Brindy. We all know what happened from there.

I dont love or hate #25 as much as people on their respective sides of the arugment... but I wont forget what he did in the playoffs while playing with that concussion.

He went from nearly a ppg player to a second line center. He had guys like Hejduk and Stewart playing with him, but still wasnt the same. Add to that the issues, like his old man yapping, and its a no brainer why he wasnt selected.

He basically ended this past season as the 3rd-line C between two grinders but still topped 50-points on an offensively anemic team.

No one talks about the 2010 run to the finals on the back of Briere and Giroux like they do that conference finals loss. I'll never understand it. So many Flyers players over the years have put forth better performances getting to the finals and put up consistent playoff numbers over their careers. This dude throws in one decent run to the conference finals and people are naming their babies after him.

But how many 5-OT playoff games did Brind'amour end?
- bradleyc4

Everybody knows the Cardiac Canes never needed to take it to 5-OT... they'd pull out a 7-6 rollercoaster win in last minute of regulation... Lavi-style baby!

That team as a whole left a lot to be desired and Barber the man deserved better than what he got going out the door. You can't score two goals in a 5 game playoff and stare down the coach. Not a single player other than Cechmanek showed up for that series.

I think it has to do with the pure gutsy aspect of it.. the guy had a very serious concussion, and comes in and just simply played with his heart... It was actually stupid to do. BUT, he was playing in Philly, a city that just recently saw Eric Lindros' career plagued by the very same injury. I think as a fan, it was a double the excitement. He didnt let the concussion beat him, and came in and was a hero on several occasions in that run... He wanted nothing more than to win the cup. Every shift.. Very reminiscent of Lappy a few years back..

Barber the man certainly did deserve better. That's why the two players that were most vociferous in their public complaints against Barber both apologized later and recognized that they were wrong to state their case publicly.

Welcome new guy..

I think you are forgetting that we have G, Simmonds, Schenn, Couts, Voracek, and to a lesser degree Wellwood and Rinaldo... who are all under 24. Its not like Williams, Gagne, Carter, Richie, etc,etc all came up in the same season.

Right now we are set with young talent. We have guys like Laughton and Cousins who could be VERY good 2 way physical players. You can never have enough of them.

- jak521

Is Cousins a physical kid? I know he has a higher offensive upside then Laughton. Laughton reminds me more of a Max Talbot type then Mike Richards type. Which I don't know how a player like Talbot gets drafted in the first round. I know both guys are small.

He had more points than both of the two guys you listed.. So why do you think he ended up in that role. Not arguing with you. I think he is a solid player, but there are obviously reasons why he is in that role. He went from being a point per game player to a 3rd line center with no help. I dont think the team is out to get him.. I dont think there is a conspiracy. Oreilly had 26 points 2 seasons ago.. Duschene has never put up points near what Stastny hit. I dont think it has anything to do with who is playing with. I think the Aves are souring on him.

I just liked that he came in, accepted that he needed to change his game and owned up to his past mistakes(like how he handled the situation with Barber).

He really seemed to mature under Hitchcock and were it not for the PCS, could have been a good mentor for guys like Richards and Carter

Well, I've met him several times and I haven't brought any of this up nor did I kick him so I like to think I've found some level of peace.

It's not so much the man I hate as the perpetuated myth of the kind of player he was and those that like to retell the tall tale as something it wasn't. Do I think he did a good job at the end of his career turning the corner from spoiled, gutless, me first underachiever to valuable teammate... sure. Repeated failure and injury will do that to people. But it's not the whole story, just a very tiny part in a long and ugly career

I get the hatred of the myth. For a long time Primeau was hated here, and he did underachieve. He found his niche under Hitchcock, matured to the point where he knew that the old spoiled brat routine wouldn't fly and changed his game and his behavior.

Unfortunately, that was cut short, and the last impression remains the lasting one for a lot of people. But I liked Primeau before the run. I had the jersey before then and relished the maturation into a good captain and team first guy.

I don't ignore the past misdeeds as much as I celebrate the effort to make changes and become more than the underachiever who whined about things.

He really had no choice. He had just vanished in the playoffs and killed his last coach. He knew he was being shopped over the summer and that there were no takers because of the salary and his inability to show up in the playoffs. It was why the Flyers signed Roenick, because they needed a first line center and he wasn't it. Hitchcock was the perfect coach for him. He came in, saw the divisive force in the locker room, took him aside and told him he needed him to be the leader. It could have back fired but I'm sure Primeau could see the situation he was in. He was an undesirable player with a large contract.

Of course if Hitchcock was brilliant he'd have had Clarke trade Primeau for Matt Ellis and kept Patrick Sharp.

I see Laughton as similar to what Richards was projected as when he was drafted. Most people felt that Richards was going to be a third line center who worked his ass off, scored 15-20 goals and was a great leader and who was physical and drove opponents crazy. What I have seen of Laughton shows me he is a chippy kid, a pain in the ass to play against and he stirs the pot. He also has a good skill set.

Cousins is similar. He had higher point totals, but he's along the same lines-annoying to play against, not afraid of the rough going. Cousins reminds me a bit of Downie, although not as big or prone to fighting-and he also agitates others more than losing his own cool. His skating needs work, which makes me wonder about his offensive upside & ability to be a center in the NHL

I havent seen a ton of games, but I have seen a bunch (more of Cousins). Cousins reminds me a lot of a Darcy Tucker like player. He is a scrappy pain in the ass player. Has the Brad Marchant like personality, but not the pure skill. I *could see him putting up 40 points (highest end) in the NHL though. He isnt a great fighter but can hold his own against guys his size. LOVES to play with an edge. His best asset is his ability to knock guys off of their game... and draw penalties.

As for Laughton, I have only seen probably 3-4 of his games, and to be honest, never paid too much attention because of the other guys on the team. Here is what I find interesting though. As of right now he was a good late 1st round selection.. and that was without even being able to really show off his offensive side of the game (due to the amazing NHL talent already on that team). What he did show though was that he is literally willing to do ANYTHING to win a game. Blocks shots, hits really hard (ask Shane Gostisbehere is he agrees with that), will fight, plays extremely sound defensively, has offense, and is extremely hockey smart. They say his best feature is his compete level.

"Laughton may be the smartest, most competitive draft eligible player for the NHL Draft."
-Sean Lafortune (director of scouting for TheScout.ca)

Ill take two players like that ANY DAY.

The thing is, he did change, and fully embraced his new role. A lot of guys wouldn't or even couldn't do that sort of thing.
