Being a GM who was a backup goalie is fine. Going from backup goalie to GM without training is the problem.

Thats my point........he went from literally taking off the pads to not having ANY training.

Seriously did anyone see this??? Please give it a view, its simply stunning.
Absolutely incredible tribute for Ruslan Salei, who as many of you know, perished in the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash. Just an absolutely beautfiful ceremony. RIP

what has steve yzerman done besides pick two spots behind garth?? when it comes to draft picks its a double edge sword..if you trade someone for a second or third round pick...the masses scream why are we trading players for second and third round picks..if you hold onto a player like pa..the masses start screaming why didn't you trade him for a second or third round pick. it goes both ways. i don't know what garth is..he's done some good and some bad..i do know he is not fully alowed to do his job because of Chuckie Wang..so i don't know how to fully evaluate him.
- NYI78

I'll tell you what Steve Yzerman did.........he picked up a solid vet goalie from the isles for a bust of a prospect!

I dont care what the masses say. Anyone with any brain would know that PA was going to go for his payday. He was NOT signing with the isles. Knowing this, Garth needs to be proactive and get something for him. I dont care if its a 2nd round pick........its an asset. Again, the theme of Garths tenure on the island is this. POOR ASSET MANAGEMENT. His job isnt to draft the highest scoring pt getting in the OHL......anyone could have picked Tavares. His job is to manage his assets, which to me, he's failed!

Yes there are former players, but if im a player, im gonna listen to someone like Steve Yzerman, who's an icon in the game, as opposed to Garth Snow who's name will be irrelevant in 20 years.

Im not chirping Snow for no reason........he deserves it. If you think he's managing this team well, then i dont know what to tell you. I was never a huge fan of PA but letting him walk for NOTHING, is poor asset management. Dumping Wisniewski at the dealine, when the islanders have needed defense for as long as i can remember......poor asset management. Getting next to nothing for Billy Guerin......poor asset management. Not extending the league leader in hits on a team starving for sandpaper......poor asset management. Inviting 4 players to camp on a tryout basis, and signing ALL FOUR of them.......poor asset management. All of these things are as a result of someone who is learning on the job. Im not someone who knows nothing about this team........im just tired of the mismanagement. The only thing thats tired here, is Snow going after players who dont wanna play here!

this is being a "monday morning quarterback"

if PA resigns with the islanders there isnt an issue...garth was told PA wanted to resign so he took that chance.

Wiz was traded because the islanders didnt think they could/wanted to retain him...

if PA was traded for a 5th round pick, isnt it safe to say someone would complain they were lacking offense and should have risked letting him walk instead of trading him for a late round pick?

which is why you should blame wang, not garth.

i bet if wang offered you the position tomorrow, youd take it...as would most here. most would prob not be doing much of a better job than garth, but who would you blame?

No question Garth was given a very tough hand. Garth took the job and he needs to find a way to somehow make it work and do a better job otherwise he can tell Wang where to go and quit.

Are you not getting this? The whole point of this discussion is about risk. "Garth was told PA wanted to resign"??? Come on man, you're better than that. PA was going to cash in, just like Jason Blake did. Thats about as obvious as obvious can be. You're not going to get a 5th rounder for a guy who has 30 goals......its just that simple. Knowing he's going to go to the highest bidder, and knowing you have a ceiling as to his contract........its better to realize you cannot keep him and get ANY kind of asset in return. Because in the end, you got nothing for a guy who scored 30 goals.....

Wizniewski was traded for the simple fact that the islanders did not want to spend the money on his salary for the remainder of the season. It had NOTHING to do with retaining his rights!

Im not blaming Garth for taking the job man..........im blaming Garth for managing this team poorly, which is a result of him having no experience. Lets get on the same page here.

Its tiring but ill repeat it, everyone who actually reads and listens to what i wrote ALL OF LAST SEASON knew how much i wanted PA traded...if i were GM, i would have traded him for the best offer...but im willing to bet if i did that, someone on this site would be complaining that i should have kept him around bc they need the production.

as for Wiz, i said nothing about retaining his rights, i said isles didnt think they could/wanted to retain him

I dont care what you or I want or anyone on hockeybuzz wants.........WE are not managing this team. Garth as GM should have gotten something for his asset. He did not.......case in point.

Your point about Wizniewski is exactly why the isles shoulda traded PA..........thank you for proving my point.

W.H.A.T

You're soooo into arguing you dont even realize what you're saying. I was talking about Yzerman vs Snow. Secondly, aquiring Nabokov had nothing to do with the departure of Duane Roloson. Nabokov didnt report.....

Im a trader.......in the real world (in trading terms) thats called " missing your leg". You pulled the trigger on one trade, without the other one being there. Thats all risk......poor GMing.

your reasoning for why Yzerman is a good GM: (original question: what has steve yzerman done besides pick two spots behind garth?? )

you: I'll tell you what Steve Yzerman did.........he picked up a solid vet goalie from the isles for a bust of a prospect!

Me: garth picked up a solid vet goalie WITHOUT having to give up a "bust of a prospect"

garth did they same thing (if not better) that qualifies Yzerman as good GM but yet you dont hold snow to the same standards

typo: traitor.....

(how can your first point be "secondly")

anyway, i know nabokov didnt have anything to do with roloson....follow this...

(according to you)
yzerman = good GM bc he made a trade for vet goalie for a bust of a prospect

(now put that aside, NOTHING related to roloson)

garth = (should be considered by YOUR standards a) good GM bc he acquired a vet goalie for even LESS than a bust of a prospect.

(nabby showing up is moot as it had no effect on the outcome of the trade)
