It should be two and two but not why you think. Colin forgot the '94 conference title. Anyway... screw it, we won!

I crunched some numbers and this will either settle this debate once and for all or it will add fuel to the fire. I've calculated the average ranking position (league standings) for the last 20, 15, 10 and 5 seasons. Here are the results:

Last 20 years
- VAN: 12.3
- OTT: 14.1
- TOR: 15.0
- MTL: 15.3
- CGY: 15.4
- EDM: 19.7

Last 15 years
- OTT: 11.1
- VAN: 12.3
- TOR: 16.5
- MTL: 16.6
- CGY: 16.9
- EDM: 19.2

Last 10 years
- VAN: 8.7
- OTT: 12.0
- CGY: 14.9
- MTL: 15.9
- TOR: 17.8
- EDM: 21.7

Last 5 years
- VAN: 6.8
- CGY: 14.6
- MTL: 14.6
- OTT: 17.8
- TOR: 25.0
- EDM: 26.2

Conclusion: Vancouver has been the better team over the last 20 years. If you remove the first few expansion years of the Senators, they were the better team over last 15 seasons. There's no doubt in recent years, the Canucks have been the best team.

Total population Quebec: 7,903,001

Just saying...only "french" Canadian team, surely has a lot to do with it.

You're right, Colin. There are no Habs fans outside of Quebec. Best of luck with your ongoing introduction to hockey. Just a head's up, the black thing's called a puck.

It would be nice if your arguments followed each other. The point made was that given QC's population size compared to BC's they have the potential for more fans, within their respective province, therefore more revenue.

Of course the Habs have fans outside the province of QC, but given they are Canada's french team, I would argue a majority of NHL fans in QC follow the Habs, which gives reason why the Habs made more money than did they Canucks, even though Vancouver has been more sucessful.

Btw, the numbers posted were for 2011, so no sense in arguing the Habs cup 20 years ago.

Ps. if my blogs have disappointed you....just don't read them.

Ah, I see. Then wouldn't it be 3? NY Islanders, NY Rangers, and Boston. Am I missing something again?

1981–82, 1993–94, and 2010–11?

I'm pretty sure '81-82 is more than 20 years ago...

Thanks for putting that together... interesting to see. Not surprising Edmonton and Toronto have been the bottom dwellers for some time now.

Also Colin, nice blog(s) idea! Just happy to get a break from the random blogs and the CBA/Lockout stuff.

While these have been a fun read.. I think the Oil should have been the Sens... Sens may have had a higher overall ranking as a tie breaker.. but they have also played in what has perenially been a softer conference in the east. That being said.. I think you should have included a future outlook as to where do you see these teams in 3-5 years time. None of the Canadian teams have as bright of future prospect wise as the Oil right now. That would have put the Oilers past the Sens.. had you also pushed this back another 5 years and done 25 years.. you would have added three stanley cups to the Oilers list. Just sayin.. regardless, we won't have any hockey to watch this year to compare the teams unfortunately but good read overall.

Canucks will continue to suck balls no matter what. And Flameless ones and Leafs are right behind them.

~15 first overall picks certainly help. Though while full of bias, I think Ottawa's prospect pool is close behind the Oilers for second best among Canadian teams.
