It's pretty obvious that this proposal is the players way of protecting their future star members from ever having to be drafted by Toronto - Oilhab

The only thing that makes those two New York teams viable, is the huge TV contracts, that MSG has with them. It also doesn't hurt that they get 3 gates each, with the New York Rangers. - PrinceLH
I suppose, but the Panthers have a lease with Broward County down here, with a lot of our profits going towards Everglades conservation. Also, our new owners are based down here in Boca Raton. It didn't help that we went through the worst 10 year stretch in hockey history. |

So a team like the Leafs who are in desperate need of a shot in the arm (which the #1 pick could give) would never have a chance to draft #1 because of the amount of money they make?
Leafs are the only team not to make the playoffs since the last lockout, they should be rewarded for that alone...
So the team that loses the most money in any given year would now get the 1st overall pick each year? How (frank)en stupid is that?
Potentially a good team (Phoenix who made SC Semi's last year) would get the #1 overall pick rather than in the 20's just because they lost a pile of money? - BoBBeR56
What's your point the leafs will get the pick sooner or later so stop complaining. That is if Burke doesn't trade it away... |

True enough. This idea of the first overall draft pick going to a struggling market is almost as bad as the re-alignment proposal that put Florida and Tampa, in with the Northeast teams. It allowed the New York area teams to travel even less and more gates for the struggling teams in NJ and the Island. They could see the Rangers and Flyers even more. All of the elite players would have flocked to those teams, because of less travel. |

This has to be BS. It makes no sense.
First of all I doubt a pick would be "arbitrarily" assigned. Also, I don't see how the #1 pick would automatically ensure a financially strapped team would become successful.
That said, I conspire to believe that Sidney Crosby was "assigned" to the Penguins for this very reason. I would think that is the exception rather than the rule (eh Rick Nash?)

I thought this was already done with Bettman giving Crosby to the Penguins after the last lockout. Worked out great for PGH, but I thought there were many other teams who saw this as an unfair practice and wouldn't want it done ever again, let alone every year.
If a (financially) struggling franchise can't hack it in the league, can't make money, & can't ice a competitive team...maybe the answer is that they just shouldn't be in the league. It's not that dissimilar from banks & car companies getting bailout funds when they screwed up and were on the verge of going under...if they can't stay in business, they should be left to go under & let someone else have a chance. |

Part II - Gary Bettman can pick which teams play in the playoffs if deemed unfair. (the Red Wings make it too much, let's give someone else a shot). Also, the Cindy clause requires that the Penguins ALWAYS make it to the Conference Finals.

Ridiculous some big market teams acctually build through the draft rather then just signing every high end free agent. - Genev21

i think this is a great move by the PA.
they know that it's never gonna fly but it makes the players come out like they are really fighting for small market/struggling teams (along with the expanded revenue sharing they proposed earlier).
their hope is that a few of the struggling owners like this idea and this causes a (further) rift b/w the haves and the have nots.
this is chess boys, not checkers. |

Ek put it in quotations, which means someone actually said it, and if we believe Ek, that someone is credible and close to the action (ie. legitimate). |

The hotel doorman doesn't count.
Even as a strategic move, it makes no sense from any angle to have this proposal. Unless NHLPA plans on looking for sympathy votes by pretending to be retarded. |
