As a fan of the disaster that is known as the Islanders I think that proposal is a facking joke!!! Just do what the NBA does and rig the draft behind closed doors

That's why I always wear my tie barely tied. You never know when an impromptu barn fight is going to occur and you need to get that tie off quick or it will be used to your opponent's advantage.

This could be the single-worst idea I've ever (frank)ing heard, and that's saying something considering the NHL's immense sample size.

Soooooooooooooo none of the teams that continually prop up this league will ever receive the #1 pick? COMPLETE BULLSH!T!!!

Even with the #1 picks, there is 0 guarantee that that will help.

PFFFT... (frank)in' NHLPA is a joke with their hollow smoke and mirror proposals that skirt around the REAL issues.

Everyone but Burke is dumb.

Everyone but Burke and Feester. Give those two 6 hours with the Hadron Collider and half the mysteries of the universe will be solved.

No, Morgan Reilly! Jankowski was a solid #2.

Next year I want whoever picks last to say "really liked this kid thought he has a real potential to be the best in this draft".

We will see. They're all being given time to develop, which is weird because apparently the Oilers never do that with players.

I can see 3-4 Cups for this team if Tambellini doesn't mess it up

City's that can't support an NHL team need to be identified with transition plans to other cities in place or reducing the total number of teams if that is what needs to happen. I believe NJ has a great fan base, so don't shoot me, but for arguments sake, this is a team with "public financial issues", but have just made it to the stanley cup final...now I don't assume GB would give them the first pick, but what if? Phoenix have been a pretty good team now for some time; yet have been in financial trouble forever! Stupid idea no matter how you put it!

You mean half the collider would be eaten and the other half (spare parts) would be traded for an incredible return.

So this is a bad idea because it rewards failure and punishes success.

What, pray tell, does a draft in which the weakest team selects first (five-team lottery permitting), and picks are assigned thereafter in reverse order of finish, do again?

All this does is change the definition of success and failure.

Edit: It's still a dumb idea, but the reasoning given here isn't why.

- dilbert719

The difference is financial success and faliure. The draft is to make all teams competative and give a form of pairity. Changing it to financial failure with mess that idea up. So failing financial teams who are at the upper end of the standings (NJ) will be rewarded because of financial management.

Since you put it that way, I don't think Feester would leave any spare parts.

I'm not a huge fan of the idea, but it's better than what is currently in place. It's disgusting to see rich teams with fans that fill their arenas fail on purpose just to get the 1st draft pick.

This would eliminate that, or at least take a step towards eliminating that terrible management style.

- comixzone

No one tanks on purpose. Just because you have not had smart enough management, you blame the sytem.

Typical.

So a team like the Leafs who are in desperate need of a shot in the arm (which the #1 pick could give) would never have a chance to draft #1 because of the amount of money they make?
Leafs are the only team not to make the playoffs since the last lockout, they should be rewarded for that alone...

So the team that loses the most money in any given year would now get the 1st overall pick each year? How (frank)en stupid is that?
Potentially a good team (Phoenix who made SC Semi's last year) would get the #1 overall pick rather than in the 20's just because they lost a pile of money?

You guys could have had a shot at them if your GM had a clue.
Who's your source exactly Ek? I have massive doubts that's actually in the proposal. Its something you would come up with.

As a fan of a "big market" team, I would suggest that this idea is perfectly fine...

as long as you take away the salary cap and salary floor.

Let's face it, large and medium market teams would never get the 1st overall, so they have to have some "other" competitive advantage to improve.

But here is a novel idea... MOVE or CONTRACT the 1/3 of the league that is in trouble to markets that want to support a team.

No. Even as a fan of a team that struggled through financial hardships, this is not the way to go about it. Teams should receive draft picks based on past year performance just as it's always been. Also, it is punishing franchises who have good business practices. Not to mention forcing a star player to stay with a struggling franchise a large portion of his money making years if RFA status is indeed extended.
