I like JJ's work quite a bit. I prefer Jones on his NBCSN studio commentary to Flyers' booth work (I thought Dornhoefer was unfairly maligned). Coatsey is Coatsey... I grew up with him in various broadcasting contexts (Pepsi Postgame Show voiceover in 1980s, radio commentator, TV broadcast booth, studio, ice-level commentator) and I know he's kind of an acquired taste.

you are showing your age...

i remember him on channel 29 and at first he was terrible...but he's gotten slightly better.

I really can't say for sure. It's different this time around than in 2004 for me. I was a high school student who wasn't as invested in sports then. Now, I'm a nine to five schlub who makes an effort to watch 82 regular season games every year. I can't predict how enthused I'll feel should the season opener be delayed significantly. Again, though, I'm not the kind of fan the NHL will lose sleep over should there be a lockout.

What do you think of the guys we have now? Jones, Jackson and Coatsey?
- stveshdy

Jackson and Coatsey can move on. Wouldn't miss either. Jones is fine when he doesn't allow himself to get dragged into Jackson's and Coatsey's annoying high school-ish banter.

Anddd now I have heard it all...

"The tactics used to bring the pain that leads to increased blood pressure are startling, too. According to BBC sources, they run the gamut from not releasing urine to cracking or breaking toes with a hammer. In between, athletes have tried sitting on a drawing pin, using tightened leg straps and sitting on their own scrotum."

I actually enjoy our group. I think it might be out of the It Could Be Much Worse Department, though.

JJ is a homer, but hey- Kalas was too. Being a hometown announcer, you always look through Homer glasses. I like the way he calls his games. When you're on TV, you're allowed to get sidetracked. It's not like the radio where he has to announce every little thing to "paint the picture" that Kalas was so good at. I like his emotion, also.

I think Jonesy has the tools (look at me...it's like he's a player hahaha) to be better but he seems a little shy. Whoever said he's spread too thin is right, in my opinion.

Big fan of Clement, especially on Comcast when he doesn't have to be all "by the book" like on NBC (always agreeing with the refs, calling players out, etc)

Coach Reid seal of approval.

The old "point with the finger".

I've heard Gene Hart. He is on another level when it comes to announcing the game. Never be another voice like that.
- stveshdy

Our guys now are pretty good. Coatsy provides the WWE humor for those that need it. Personally, I'm fine with him.

Gene Hart was on another level. Clearly, goog pipes run in that family. But talk about a man good at his craft and loving his job.

I think there will be at least 5-6 veterans who play overseas. I figure Bryzgalov will play in the KHL, Giroux will go somewhere (Switzerland perhaps), Voracek to Kladno in the Czech Extraliga, Timonen (health dependent) to KalPa, Grossmann to a team in Sweden (AIK, perhaps), Hartnell to either KalPa or Kladno. There could be others.

Among the younger players, Couturier, B. Schenn, Rinaldo, Wellwood and Gustafsson are all eligible to be assigned to the Phantoms.

Will other leagues in Europe (minus SEL) limit the amount of NHL players under contract to play for each team in the respective leagues they choose to play in?

It always kills me when people complain about the hometown broadcasting groups being homers....What else would they be? If you want down the middle announcing watch national broadcasts. Part of the reason I enjoy the Center Ice is watching and listening to other teams' broadcasters......They are ALL homers.

Ive heard Jackson do national games and he plays it exactly down the middle. But when the Flyers are cutting his check, he is going to root for the team. It is what it is, and frankly it is what it should be.

By the way, I loved Thorne and Clement. I also prefer Clement to Jonesy. Jonesy has gone down in my eyes because of the way he sucks up to Angelo in the morning and feeds in to the Bryz hate.

Dorny was great, if you didn't like his particular brand of folksy wisdom you need to turn in your membership card and go become a Bruins fan, because their announcers are obviously more your taste...

Agreed AND if you watch enough puck from around the league you see that there are some announcers that are just more vocal for their team then others. PIT and BUF come to mind. That is perhaps where I could see you calling "local" announcers homers.

Unlikely, IMO, but they'll keep their import player limits intact. With door to Elitserien at least temporarily closed, I think more players will go to teams such as Red Bull Salzburg in the EBEL: so-so level of competition but pretty good pay. KHL and Swiss National League will be the "choice" destinations.

When I interviewed Mike Emrick some years back about the hockey broadcasting business, he told me that when doing local broadcasts, it should be about a 60-40 ratio of focusing on the local team's performance and players (although in Philly, it's preferred at about 80-20), and in national broadcasts, the networks want about 50 percent game storyline/focus player emphasis and 50 percent game action with an equal split between the two sides.

Now, now--there were times when they were all over Richards and Giroux respectively, so let's not just say 87 about four hundred times here.

Jackson is great. I don't consider him to be the homer that some people making him out to be. He's entertaining for an entertaining sport. If I wanted an analysis or dissection of every little detail I'd probably wouldn't watch the game.

Jonsey is pretty good, but you can tell he's a former player.

Coatesy is God awful.

Bill Clement is the best. His analysis, attention to detail, his Clement-isms--they are all great. I look forward to the first two rounds of the playoffs just because of the excitement in his voice--which leads me to...

I was too young to fully appreciate Gene Hart, or really understand the epicness of him. To be it will always be Dorney and Jackson. However, Doc Emerick is my favorite announcer of all time. His voice is great, his analysis and sayings are fantastic. He really does lend a helping hand in growing the sport of hockey.

Disagree. San Jose's broadcast team is the least homerish - and best in the biz. That's my opinion. YMMV.

I, too, enjoy Hahn and Remenda. They do a great job night in and out.
