Love this signing. Great Job Tambo. Ebs should get a similiar deal. - Oilersforlife
Tambo? when he fixes the gaping holes from whats missing from your line up he'll deserve Tambo. Its like drafting first doesn't take allot of thought... |

Getting paid based on potential. Hasn't had a 50 point year yet and is already going to make $6 million. Tavares' deal was a steal for the Isles. - zach parise9
Really?
Last year he had 53pts in 61 games. That prorates to a 71 point season. Check out how much 70 point guys go for. |

Exactly. The boy has skill and great potential. That can't be argued. But the injuries have to be a bit concerning (even just a little). - bloatedmosquito
Most of the injuries were fluke things. The high ankle sprain from an awkward fall in a fight, the massive cut on the head form Potters skate. I think he'll be fine. |

Gaping holes??? Um last I checked the Oil played with a patched together D last year and a goalie that Flames fans say is not a true #1 guy.
Yet when I look at the stats...they show that the Oilers allowed 153 goals against even strength last year compared to Calgary's 151 goals against with a supposed strong D and a great goaltender? So which is it? Is Edmontons D and goaltending terrible ? Or is Calgary's D and goaltending Terrible as well? |

And the shoulder and concussion? Pillow fights with Ebs? I like Hall and I'd hate to see his career cut short by injuries, despite the fact he plays for the Oilers. For a guy in the league for what, 2 years, he's missed enough time to have the over-used "injury-prone" title... |

Grasping at straws I see...
Slightly different situation. What is Hall? 20yrs old?
He wouldn't have signed long term if he didn't wanna stay there... |

Stats can be spinned anyway you want... ask the NDP. Schultz hasn't played in the NHL and you're next best is Smid? You have a (future) all-star line up up front... So you have confidence that your D and your goaltending are (1) getting you in the playoffs (2) winning you the Stanley Cup? You finished 3rd last (a remarkable achievement moving up from dead last)... My point is not to compare the Flames but to say your GM has done (frank) all!!!! |

On the contrary...he has done EXACTLY what they said they were going to do...
Get younger and build through the draft and avoid bringing in over paid over rated Vets and RFa's UFA's. It was more painful last year because with all the D injuries, they were tempted to make a trade for a stop gap, but instead brought up Pekham, Plante and Tuebert, knowing that they are not the answer long term. N Schultz is a big upgrade over Gilbert, Smid is a legit top shutdown guy, Petry grew by leaps and bounds last year and Whitney is finally by all acounts healthy again. Add in J Schultz and I think we'll see the Oil surprise many this season (if there is one). |

Why fight this? Our defense is horrible, we were 29th for a reason. |

Pretty much. Honestly I don't see a deal being done post lockout being all that much different. Only difference is now there is potential for a wal-mart rollback. |

Because our defense last season - Was not our real Defense. It was patched together with AHL'ers most of the season. |

You seem to be the only smart Edmonton fan.
Honest question
What would you have done differently to improve this team? What players would you have gone after? Or are you happy with the way your GM has handled things? |

So define your "real defense"...
Goaltending? Dubnyk will be as good as Quick and solidify the Oilers as a contender?
He's a good goalie but he's not one to bet your franchise on. |

Resonably:
Skid Bulin, bring in a platoon level goalie to split duties with DD (Garon/Clemson level guy)
Happy with the Shultz signing, but would have liked a vet brought in as well, Michalek/Vishnosky as examples but lots of other options, and then maybe a 5/6 type guy as well (Hannan as an example)
3rd line winger to play with Horc/Smyth and push Jones down to the 4th line
I don't think that would make us a cup contender by any stretch, but I'd be really comfortable with the line-up and could see it contending for a PO spot. |

I will be the first to admit that you have great forwards on your team with great potential (if they can stay healthy), but to defend your D core last year is laughable. Watching the first pass out of the D-zone was hilarious along with teams staying in your zone at will.
I can admit that the Flames suck in certain areas but your team was 29th last season, obviously the Oilers are lacking something. |

Yeah, I think he will learn how to play a bit of a less reckless game though. His first couple years he seemed to put himself in vulnerable positions, and his speed caused him to over commit at times. I think he will smarten up and play a more intelligent game, avoiding injury. - moondawg
heh, vulnerable positions to say the least....everytime Hall is charging i cringe waiting for something horrible to happen....it seemed like Taylor Hall came straight out of EAsports NHL 12...i bet we owe the fact they added that feature where if u charge too hard and miss the hit your player crumbles into the boards usually resulting in injury
so thank you Taylor Hall.
nevertheless he is SICK! and an exiting player to watch, but when it comes down to the Eberle Hall comparisons sure Hall might have the better upside but at the end of the day i'd place higher value (even if slight) on the player who's gonna actually BE in that OT to score that goal, not the one who got injured at the end of the 3rd cuz he tried to force it in and ran through the net, the goalie and the boards....lol
im not hating tho i absolutely love Hall's style of play it takes balls! |

Problem with garon is he might be worse than Bulin. Would've liked someone with a bit of potential with something to prove to go with DD.
Still think we see a Martin or someone deemed a poor contract come in once CBA is figured out.
Not shocked that Hannan isn't here and really they get another top 4 and he wouldn't be needed.
Also not shocked a bottom 6 guy didn't come in. |
