6 years seems to be the preferred term leading up to September 15th with Hartnell, Simmonds and Pacioretty all signing 6year deals this week ranging from $4M to $4.75M.

I think I could live with 6 x $4.5M.

I'd extend Lupul 5 years $5.5M.. However, there would be no NMC. If he becomes a burden he is being moved to the minors in the later years of his contract.

Hemsky seems like a decent comparison. However, Hemsky only signed a $5m x 2 deal. That said, I can't see Lupul signing a longer term with more money annually.
It's one or the other, he shouldn't get both.
