okey dokey....they paid top dollar like they always seem to.

i think in 2 years that contract is going to be a steal. The guy is young and is still improving.

What are you basing it on that the paid top dollar?

and no ryan, or doan either. for weeks it seemed like there was a doan story somewhere. that's gone cold.

i don't even care anymore who's on the team or will be on the team. i just want to watch hockey.

Bill,

Great analysis on the negotiation process. I agree it is ashame it seems that posturing is always part of the process. The subcommittees on both sides continue to meet to hammer out all non-economic related issues to a new CBA I would assume. I wouldn't expect much movement on the economic side till after Labor day.

I don't share the same point of view on that. There is far more going on then posturing. The frustration was clear in Fehr's voice yesterday. The players did far more then posturing. They proposed that the owners and players share in helping out the poorer teams in the League. The League rejected the principal of it. Before they can even start to negotiate, they need to find a starting point. They can't even do that right now.

Certainly, I respect your opinion, but I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. As time gets closer to September 15th, I think negotiations will proceed on the economic issues, just my opinion. I just don't believe anything meaningful will happen until after Labor day. If you disagree and the lockout begins September 16th, you can gladly tell me I was all wrong.

Gents, off to work, enjoy the day. Glad to see Wayne is on board, great job by Homer.

Unfortunately, all of this drama is part of the process.

Simmonds' extension looks a lot like what Hartnell got in 2007... it might look like a slight overpayment at the start, but the value will emerge throughout the life of the contract. His goal and shooting % increases from 2011-12 have more to do with landing a prime PP role more than anything... unless that changes, I don't see his production dropping even though he's not a guy who can put up points without help from his linemates.

So this extension announces Simmonds is on the trading block, right?

I'm betting a deal has already been made and he will be traded by Saturday morning.

The NHL is taking a hardline, monolithic stance with the expressed purpose of shaking the players' resolve by making Sept 15 loom large on the calendar.

The PA countered with finesse by selectively disclosing the parts of their proposal that seem pragmatic and reasonable, thereby making a grab for the favor of the media and fans.

As you said, there hasn't even been a starting point for negotiation established yet, so aside from basic fact-finding and briefing the constituencies, it's been nothing but strategic posturing up until now.

Leighton is one of the few on Holmger's 'untouchable' list.

I would not give up on the Schenn Bros. I think Luke Schenn is going to be the forgotten element in the Argument against the Flyers Defense this summer. (and with the lockout looming that could be a long summer) This is a guy who is one of the highest rated young shutdown Defenders in the league. He's still developing and like Giroux, really needs to be given pressure and responsibility to grow further at this point in his development. It think with Toronto's Defensive depth he was stuck behind Phaneuf & Co. I think with Philly he's really going to get a lot more opportunity & responsibility. I would not be surprised to see him on the PP and have Philly's coaching working with him to develop his offensive game more. As much as we have debated that Bourdon & Gus do not have a high ceiling on their projected game, Luke Schenn does have top line potential.

Edit:Oh and I diddn't realize he has a right handed shot. Doesn't he know all Philly D are southpaws?

I don't really see the correlation to the Pacioretty contract, but a nice deal nonetheless.

I agree entirely that the negotiations will get more dire as they reach the deadline. But there is no doubt that there will be a lockout. It's just a question of how long.
