How do Canucks fans go from "he's worth a ton, he's a number 1 goalie" to "we'll just loan him to sweden or bury him in the ahl"

he's either worth something or he's not. If you're looking at burying him in the AHL clearly you're thinking he's not worth his contract and by that thinking, with a limited number of teams who would even consider taking on that contract there's even less value to him. It's like saying that Wade Redden was worth something in a trade, until the Rangers realized that his contract was garbage and had to bury him in the ahl because no one wanted him.

In order to move Luongo out, you will not get the value for him you're looking for, which means taking back a bad contract or less value in trade. Reality strikes Canucks fans, but it hasn't hit Gillis yet.

Weak logic. Luongo is worth something, but it may not be attainable. That is how another scenario (like the one noted) fits in without contradicting the first.

I'm pretty sure Lu would get waived thus leading to his retirement over the final 4 yrs. Actual payout would be so small he would want the embarrassment. But yes the komi thing is a head scratcher

JEEBUS!

Esplen should be banned for even suggesting this trade scenario in a blog!!!

To show just how ridiculous this is into perspective. The top 3 goalie cap hits are:
1. Rinne (29 yrs.) - $7M x 7 yrs. > (until 36 yrs. old)
2. Lundqvist (30 yrs.) - $6.875M x 2 yrs. > (until 32 yrs. old)
3. Price (24) - $6.5M x 6 yrs. > (until 30 yrs. old)

And then there's Esplen's scenario for Luongo who is not only older (almost a decade over Price!), but isn't as good as any of the G's listed above and would carry:
- $9.83M cap hit x 4 yrs. > (until 37 yrs. old :aah
- $5.33 cap hit x 6 yrs. (until 43 yrs. old :aah
- In all likelihood waived at 39/40 yrs. old

Suddenly Gardiner, Rielly and a 2013 1st doesn't sound so bad!

You must be forgetting the "everyone wants to help the leafs rule" the only way to work out a deal is give them something for nothing afterall the most important thing is caphits as all players are generic and I'm sure Reimer and Scrivens are fully capable of playing the same level Lou always does....

Between bosak, ashton and percy u can have 2 of them and a second but that's for luongo and a 3rd.

Vancouver doesn't have to move Luongo... Toronto DOES need a starting goalie.

Ian, I request no more Leafs in your headlines please, it seems to bring out the... well you know. Can we get a code name for the Leafs, so we are the only ones who know what you are talking about. I've come up with a few code names for you to consider.

Kansas City Royals
New York Islanders
Barney
Ellen Degeneres
Kimmie Gibler

This approach will do wonders for Vancouver's PR and attracting future UFA's!

I wonder if the league and NHLPA would also have a few things to say about this?

I love how you keep on saying Sweden when it will never happen. I wish I knew you so we could bet some real money. Id put 500 bucks down easy to say he will never be in sweden playing hockey.

Fact: the Luongo contract did not circumvent the cap. It was looked at and deemed fine. Don't make stuff up -- there's enough of that going on here!
- Vagabond

The Vancouver fans are selling a 6 year contract with the luongo trade, but he has 10 years left? How are they telling us that its really only 6 years if there was no cap circumventing going on?

He intends to play the full 10 years? i am confused now

Something smells funny again..

Your forgetting about the bad one your trying to get rid of with a limited trading field.

It's an interesting concept, the buyout would make what 3? if the cap goes down that could put us in a bit of trouble quickly, as wolftos said 3 buyouts would be 3.2 a year for 2 years than 1.4 for 2 more which wouldn't be bad, just all 3 for 2 years

- MindFr3eak

But the one we are unloading can play at the NHL level

Quick, Lundqvist, Rinne, Smith, Howard, Kippur, Price, Halak, Lethonen, Schneider, Ward, Miller and Thomas all goalies who I would take over Luongo for next year if I was a GM. Not top 5

Raymond makes 2.275 not 2.16

- Habsforever101

Luongo is better than all but Quick and Lundqvist on that list. I exclude Schneider for obvious reasons and Thomas because he's done.

Whatever, you get the point.

Luongo isn't a top 5 goalie anymore, maybe not even top 10 given his age and that he's most likely on the decline. He also won't have the benefit of having as good as team in front of him either.

luongo's value as a goalie has plummeted and the vancouver media/canucks management hasn't done anything to help either.

it's painfully obvious - the guy is old and was signed to a STUPID deal - everybody knows this - the luongo situation is a byproduct of his own mediocre play and a terrible management plan that completely lacked foresight. burke and company are driving this bus, not the vancouver management team. to believe otherwise is insane.

the hypocrisy and the contradictions are crazy - an old, mediocre goalie with a bizarre contract who was betrayed by his own team when it mattered most (and justifiably so - because he's mediocre) all of a sudden has the value of a king's ransom...

vancouver isn't doing toronto any favours by ditching this geezer on them... it's the other way around... and that should be reflected in any kind "trade", for lack of a better word... in my mind vancouver would be lucky if toronto took this geezer for nothing!!!

- wielerj

Well, there's some ignorance for you. Luongo remains an elite goalie and likely will perform as such for another 4-6 years.
