I will never trade with Philly unless it is a no brainer win for the Sabres. I do not want Danny Briere's 6.5M for three more years on the books. It will impede us from being able to afford to retain future FA's like Miller, Pommer and Vanek. We have a lot of young players that are due raises soon. Ennis, Hodgson, Foligno, Mcnabb, Tropp and Enroth to name a few, all of their contracts are up in the next one or two years. Miller, Vanek, Pominville and Gerbe are all UFA's in two years. The cap is going down with the new CBA and from what I have read it doesn't look like their will be any roll-back's in player salaries. Although we will shed the contracts of Regher, Leopold and Pardy, there will not be a lot of cap space after retaining our RFA's. Putting Briere's contract on our books could very well mean that we will not even have an option at keeping Pominville and/or Vanek.

it's a young mans game
very good chance, more likely then not, that pommer and vanek would have worse production on the ice per season in their next contract. Esp. if it is for similar amounts or in Pommer's case, more money.
The key to the future is the kids, not the core
Miller included
the next 2 years will be huge for this team, either moving forward or parting ways with the remainder of the core IMO
If the team does well, I am pretty sure Leopold will be retained, esp if a cup run is expected for the 2013-14 season

The only thing that makes the twitter guys everyone is bashing any different than, say, Homer or Rico, (both of whom I respect), is that some of the things Homer/Rico have said actually happened. - joevthree
LOL. Are you serious? Rico is well known for making the most outlandish trade proposals on this site. He has absolutely no idea what is going on.
Darcy is not trading for Statsny or Ryan..Those teams don't want prospects or picks in return and Darcy never trades guys who are signed for more than 1 season. Next year is the year to watch because Vanek, Pominturtle and other guys will be in the last year of their deals and that's the only time he trades anyone.
The Sabres need a guy like Bobby Ryan who will guarantee you 30 goals a year instead of guys like Stafford who will score 31 in 60 games (Stafford)and then dissapear the following season, or Stewart who scores 28 2 years in a row, then has his own dissapearing act and drops to 16. The Sabres have a boatload of 2nd line players. Not too many consistent top notch players - sbroads24
If Stafford was playing with Getzlaf he would score more goals, Ryan wouldn't score 30 goals playing on the Sabres because Lindy Ruff would switch the lines around all the time and the first time Ryan made a bad pass or lazy back check he would have his icetime cut to 10 minutes. Chemistry and coaching are important in hockey, if a guy is getting zero pp time or he is playing on a line with bums how can he score? The Sabres could have traded for Mike Bossy or Jari Kurri in the early 80s but those two guys wouldn't have scored 50-60 goals playing on Buffalo. It doesn't mean they are bums, just they didn't have the same talent to play with.

If Bobby Ryan was going to be traded, it would have happened by now. The more I hear about him, and the rumors surrounding the return Anaheim wants, the more I think the reports about the unrest between him in the Ducks are greatly overstated. He will still be a Duck when the season starts, whenever that is. - buffalofan19
100% agree any trade now till the dealine will be an overpayment

I agree that we need vets
not sure if it comes from the core though

Veteran leadership dont need to plug in an old guy for the sake of doing it. Erhoff and Regher dont seem to give much leadership form the back and the core has never rally shown it on the front

Ehrhoff was probably our best vet voice on the ice last year... I could hear him from f'n Iowa.
Regehr wasn't nearly what anyone expected him to be on the ice.. but off the ice.. players like Weber and McNabb both praised him for taking them "under his wing" and being a "coach on the ice and in the film room"
