It's not just about a governing body, though. The union is a tight-knit bunch. The players believe they are working for eachother. If I take $3 million instead of $5 million, that robs my buddy, who is up for a contract next year a chance of making more money. I don't agree with it, but that's the mindset. It's easy for us to say "cry me a river", but the reality is, that's just not how the system works.

A billion dollar stadium that's used one day a week for 7-9 weeks a year isn't going to single-handedly turn around an economy. In order to get hotels, etc. downtown, you need a reason to put them there. And the only reason to put them there are big businesses, none of which come to Buffalo, and the ones that do all go to Amherst.

If you build billion dollar sports complexes without the supporting permanent businesses, you become broke (not that Buffalo is already prosperous). See every city that's held the Olympics.

That's the problem. A facility like that can't be a "start". It needs to come only when things are well established. Otherwise, everyone ends up broke.
