His stats against lefties this year are mostly as a pinch hitter when the other team went righty then lefty. I agree, he sucks as a pinch hitter against lefties.
- jstross

The problem is, he's going to be used mostly as a pinch hitter. I don;t think he's worthless at all, but I doubt he's going to be much more than a 4th OF and spot start kind of guy.

Nothing wrong with that, at all. You need those guys and Schierholtz is cheap

Schierholtz, Joseph, Rosin > aumonte, Gillies, Ramirez IMO.

Who knows if he'll even be on the team next year.
- MJL

Hes under control and very cheap until 2014. He's not that bad compared to what we have. He should make the team unless they trade him.

Those guys are terrible. Aumonte is suppose to be the best player and he's average at best (thats not even at MLB level).

I think the Phillies got him back because they traded two OF today. Gives them another body for the rest of the year. I don't think the Phillies are going to ask him to be an everyday OF next year.
- stveshdy

I'm sure that was a factor, and I expect him to be a Phillie next year. He's fine as a bench player. I remember when they had the corpse of Bob Molinaro as a spare OF

He's fine as a 4th guy, spot starter or defensive replacement late in games. But I'm not going to act like they got anything more then your average bench player. And a trade of Hunter Pence should get you more then they got.

yeah, I'm not saying he's Jayson Werth(uhm wait he's better, LOL), but anytime you can get a contributing ML player along with a top 100 prospect and another high ceiling long shot it's a pretty big return.

He'll be on the team. He's make just about every national league roster.

Thats fine. I just think with the Phillies trading two OF's today it made sense to get back one that has played at the MLB level with prospects. Now that return isn't going to knock your socks off but I explained why they probably made the trade.

Like I said, I agree with your reasoning of why the trade was likely made. Doesn't make it a good one. And like I said previously, hopefully whatever moves they make in the off season makes up for it. That's all you can hope for at this point.

RAJ got ripped off. I hated that trade. I wanted replacements for Minny Mart and Gloud. I was pissed when the PTBNL was Domingo Santana(who is tearing it up). I believe Joseph is currently ranked higher than Cosart, but Singleton is a stud.

Well Werth was a part timer when he landed in Philly. Most saw him as little more than a platoon guy, and he had some big stat years here.

I'm OK with the return on Pence. Joseph is a very good prospect, not only is he expected to be a good hitter, he's also considered a good fielder. Rosin, from what I've read is a solid kid, too.

And you need 4th outfielders. So no problem taking Schierholtz, and hopefully he's as good as his numbers for them.

Honestly you never know with prospects. Its a roll of the dice sometimes. What looks good can turn out bad and vise versa. You would think they could get more for Pence b/c he wasn't a rental since teams would have control for another year.

No worries. Kevin Frandsen took Strasburg deep tonight!

We just disagree.

Schierholtz > Santana at least for the next 5 years
Joseph > Cosart
Singleton > Rosin, but Phils got an extra year.
Not bad.

I think the possible cost scares teams a bit.

Pence is a good player. No denying it. Looking at similarity scores, you see names like Either, Kemp.

But his game is not as refined as guys like that. He hurts himself with flaws in his fundamentals, and he's too old to change. When he tried to be a more selective hitter and change his approach, his performance fell.

A team like Washington will ignore that and pay him a lot of cash. With the tightness of the Phillies budget, plus the ages of the core players, they needed to move on.

There's a player missing from your equation. And what are you basing that Joseph is greater then Cosart on?
One's a pitcher and another is a catcher.

Frandsen's had a good year at AAA. I'm surprised he wasn't called up earlier, with the troubles Polanco's had and the poor fielding by his replacements.

Give the kid a chance. Now is the time to let some young guys play. Lets see what they got. Even though hes 30.

Zeid sucks if that's who you're referring to. He won't make their 40 man and won't be picked up. Rosin has much mor potential because he throws 93-96. Joseph is a top 10 catcher prospect and I believe a top 100 prospect. Cosart was bumped up to AAA despite having a horrendous 1.39 WHIP in AA. Small sample in AAA, but his WHIP is 1.759. He still a top prospect, but I think he's dropped from the top 100.
