we just disagree. His career numbers are better than Ludwick and similar to Vernon Wells the first two teams in playoff contention. A .270 hitter with a .320 OBP has a place in a lineup with supposedly bug hitters like Howard and Utley. He's certainly a huge upgarde over Nixx and Mayberry,

His career numbers are similar to Ludwick and Wells? I think maybe you need to look at their numbers again. And we'll start with that he's never been an everyday player.
He's a bench player, nothing more. The kind of player you can pick up every off season. Not a guy to take as part of the return for a player like Pence.

Blanton will most likely get traded in August. Just hope he keeps pitching well so he has some value.
- jstross

I hope so but at that point the Phillies will have paid most of his salary and does no good for saving money.

Schierholtz will give them some depth but they plan on Dom Brown being a full time player from here out. Will see what they can do in the offseason to upgrade the team.
- stveshdy

Absolutely, it's time to give Brown a shot. No pressure, no pennant race, just go out and play and learn, Kid

Schierholtz is the the Phillies best OF right now.
- jstross

He's not better then Juan Pierre. Even though Pierre is 34 and in the twilight of his career.

Its very possible.

Nix, Mayberry, Pierre, Brown, Schierholtz, and Wiggington. Now really an All-Star caliber OF.

- stveshdy

To get back a top 100 prospect and an average ML OF plus a high ceiling flame thrower(pot luck) is not a bad return. Pence is not worth $14 million, IMO. The mistake was trading for him last season when the Phils could've used a couple of bit players like Jamey Carroll to replace Minny Mart and a LH bat to replace Gloud.

Absolutely. They need to find out if they count on him next year.

Better fielder and believe it or not a much better hitter against lefties. Pierre just can't play against lefties any more. he should've been traded, but I think the 40 man is filling up.

I'm not totally disappointed with the Pence trade. They got back a catcher who is legit and in a few years they will need one cause Ruiz isn't getting any younger. The Phillies need Utley, Howard and Rollins to perform (which could be tough) for this team to be successful next season.

He's not a better player then Pierre is. Not on his best day. Pierre is a career .296 hitter who has been a full time player the majority of his career. Schierholtz has never been a full time player. The most at bats he's ever had in a Season is 335. He's a 4th outfielder and bench player.

Schierholtz has a .174 average against Lefties

I honestly don't think he will be a full time player here either.

I agree. valle up to AAA which is good to see. I like the Vic trade but I'm a little worried that lindbalm(sp). his away ERa is upper 4s.

That was a good deal for a pending UFA in comparison to the awful Pence deal.

He's putting up those numbers in limited time, though. Hard to believe a team as offensively challenged as the Giants(25th in runs scored) would trade such a potent bat.

He's got a better average and OBP than Mayberry and Nix, but both of those players have more power, and both can play multiple positions. He certainly fits in the mix off the bench, I just doubt that he's the next Jayson Werth.

LMAO. Schierholtz has a .291 lifetime average against lefties. Are you smoking something tonight?

Talking lifetime. most of those ABs as a lefty this year are as a pinch hitter when the opposing team went righty and then lefty.

Not a great deal but not terrible.

He does, but he's only hitting .174 against them this year, and only .234 last year.

His stats are aided by a monster 2009 vs lefties, where he hit .370 against them. Still the .291 figure is correct for his career

His stats against lefties this year are mostly as a pinch hitter when the other team went righty then lefty. I agree, he sucks as a pinch hitter against lefties.

Talking lifetime. Uhm, you obviously don't follow baseball as much as hockey. most of those ABs as a lefty this year are as a pinch hitter when the opposing team went righty and then lefty. Sheez, stick to hockey.
- jstross

No those at bats are against lefthanders. It's written in plain English. And he's hitting .174 against them. As I correctly said. You'll also notice that most of his at bats this year are against RH pitchers. Which is interesting because you would think that a player that hits lefties so well would get more at bats against lefties.
Amazing what I know for not following baseball isn't it?

Tell me, how much baseball do I actually watch? I would think that someone who follows baseball would know that he's a bench player and a 4th outfielder

I think the Phillies got him back because they traded two OF today. Gives them another body for the rest of the year. I don't think the Phillies are going to ask him to be an everyday OF next year.

Who knows if he'll even be on the team next year.
