With all due respect to my fat, boxed American friend, I think you are misunderestimating (yeah, I did that on purpose) the Canadian hockey media.
There is no way that the Canucks could just kill the rumours.
Think of McNabb vs. TO - do you really think that Eagles management saying "There is no problem - everyone look at these shiny keys" would have bought them any time or space? - Atomic Wedgie
Nah, they should have stated that they were doing whatever shake-ups needed to try to win that series...I would have lied a (frank)ing river to protect the team's interest in Lu for trade purposes...I don't care what the fans or media thought...How in the world are they gonna get what he's worth in this situation? |

If you think Luongo is a stellar goalie that teams would be crazy to not trade for then why doesn't Gillis keep him and trade Schneider instead? - DarthKane
Because Gillis (and co) believe that Schneider is stellar-er |

TOTALLY agree. The night they got eliminated only "stock" responses, "we gave it our all" "you have to give credit to LA, they played a hell of a series"... Then, before the players clean out their lockers, the coach and GM conduct the exit interviews and talk about the cone of silence with the players, then have at er. Media can ask all they want, but if they keep getting the cliche responses eventually they will stop asking. - 1970vintage
Gonna have to disagree on this one, too.
But don't forget, you already agreed to Luongo for Steckel.
Yes, you did.

Did too. |

Schneider earned his chance by outplaying Luongo. Reimer's getting his chance because you're got no one else. If I were a Leafs fan, I'd want Lu. - micah555
Most do want LU, you want full value, we can't afford full value, we fleeced ourselves for Kessel and Burkie may have be having a hard time pulling a trade off here.
IMO Luongo is/has been one of my favourite goalies in the league, When im not passed out sat night im watching the late games. He is gonna cost alot we dont really have much, so if we give the little up we do have we effectivly negate the positives that lu brings and were no better off.
catch 22 sad but true.

So we made the playoffs with luu.. Then we lose in the first round? Then what? Was that really worth it when the "team" is not ready for playoffs? - Mapleleafs_91
That'll give the financially strapped Leafs far more revenue than Luongo's salary, so they make more than enough to cover his (supposedly) horrible contract. Simple enough. |

Well, considering neither Vancouver nor Toronto nor Florida has ever actually stated what they think he is worth, I guess they would just have to do what they have in fact already done: wild speculation.
Komisarek, D'Amigo and a 3rd.
And you could probably talk me into upping that to a 2nd.
That's my offer, and I'm sticking to it. |

Ian:
Here's the flaw in your thinking:
Yes, Luongo would help the Leafs this year. And the year after that.
After that, there is a real possibility of his skills diminishing.
But a GM's job is to build a team for the present and future.
Luongo's contract puts a significant risk upon any team's future success.
That's why his trade value right now is Komisarek, D'Amigo and a 3rd.
In my humble opinion, of course.
And to answer your next question, yes, I'd like to see him in a Leafs sweater. - Atomic Wedgie
False assumption above. Luongo's contract is no financial burden at all to the Leafs. Peanuts. |

Thou doth giveth the media too much credit. Botchford - "so Lu, would you accept a trade"? Luongo - "You know Botch, this is a really great team and we all get along so well. You know, the core has really grown up together here and we just won back to back season titles and came within a game of the cup. We're really looking forward to getting this thing done." Botchford - "That's great, but what about the trade?" Luongo "Well, as I mentioned, the team really played their hearts out and we don't want to use the short off season as an excuse, but I really think a full summer of training will help us to be ready for another great season." Botchford - " Yes yes, but what about the trade?" Luongo - "That's an interesting point, but its not something I have any control over. You know, the management manages and the players play." Botchford - "but IF you were asked, would you accept a trade?" Luongo - "You just never know what's going to happen, I'm just really focused on recharging this offseason and being ready for next year." |

you van fans are insane. Every GM is laughing with content knowing that you are stuck with Bobby Lou. To Chicago , Bobby, to Van Frolik , Olesh, bag of pucks. - Dojodan
And 29 GMs are laughing and 1 shuddering at the goaltending the Hawks do have. To Chicago -- Luongo. To Vancouver Seabrook and Sharp (as long as you're being ridiculous). |

What do you think the Canucks would have gotten for him if they kept the trade on the down low? I think they would have received a nice return and this would have been over a long time ago... - Flyfreaky
Giv the NHL GM's a little credit. They don't need to hear it from the players to see the situation for what it is. You seem to think that the GM's need the media hype to keep their awareness level up to that of the casual hockey fan.

I don't know much about Schroeder or however you spell it. Is he any good? - Panthers88 he is the all time leading scorer in Us world Jr history. Should become a fine 2nd line center, providing he can overcome his lack of size. Comparable to Cliff Ronning or Andy McDonald

You're probably right, those guys would never stop asking, they would just write whatever nonsense they felt like.
Don't know anything about D'Amigo but Komisarek is not really a fit in Van unless you're taking Ballard back, and in that case, make the 3rd a 1st and it's a deal.
Edit - D'Amigo isn't looking like much of a prospect, make it Ashton instead... |
