Vanek has two years left at an appx $7 mil cap hit. Ryan has three years left at a appx $5 mil cap hit.

Both are comparable players, with Ryan having the edge because of his salary and another year left at a good price. So Buffalo would be the clear winner there.

Sekera is a $2.75 mil cap hit and has three years left. He's a good talent to have around, but I wouldn't cry if he left for a good return, and Ryan is good enough, especially because the Sabres would have him for a year longer than Vanek.

The 1st rounder bothers me, but I think I'd agree to it just because I like the idea of shedding some salary (Vanek + Sekera is almost $10 mil, Ryan coming back is $5 mil, leaving $5 mil more in cap space).

Because Ryan and Vanek are comparables point-wise, this basically comes down to whether or not you'd be willing to give up three years of Sekera for one year of Ryan.

glad darcy is in control. he makes good deals for our team. outside of when hasek forced his hand i cannot remember him making a bad deal.
