Yep that's what I thought becasue they do a lot of damage. - Al
Problem with hogs is they are prolific, destroy everything and are very hard to hunt and kill. Harder than deer IMO. |

Got that right on type-2...And the way we went about screwing over the sugar industry was also bad business.
It's good for cattle and chicken feed. Besides I like a good serving of corn on the cob now and then. Especially with a lot of small farms not too far from me.
My gripe about the fuel side is ethanol is horrible investment as the technology stands today. Not enough BTUh for too many $$$ to process AND livestock feed is being burned to boot. - blackhawk24
I've heard the corn used for ethanol is different..it has almost NO nutritional value |

Again, a lot of misinformation exists in this area. Ethanol is a great energy source, clean and it puts no money in the pockets of those who attacked us, but in Brazil, where every single vehicle runs on it, they make it from sugar cane. You are right, it is expensive and inefficient to make it from corn. But don't kid yourself, the oil and gas industry is fighting the development of alternate sources and refinement of ethanol with everything they have. And they, like the corn lobby, have no problem therefore seeing corn subsidized and overplanted every year. |

Yes, but making ethanol from corn is way more expensive than it is from other sources. That's the problem. |

It's field corn, similar to that for livestock. Problem is the power that is yielded for the power going in (e.g. production & distribution processes A-to-Z). Couple in the fact the pound of material yield / acre of growth is lower compared to things switch grass and it's a recipe for disaster.
The ethanol molecule and others similar are potentially a valid substitute / replacement. The economy of scale just isn't there yet. |

Misguided...Ethanol takes a great deal of water to process also...People think it only increases the price of corn, which is a big issue... but by overplanting corn the other grains etc go up in price.
Someday, hopefully sooner than later we will run cars or at least all commercial vehicles on natural gas. |

I just know the science JJ, and have a perimeter feel for the politics. This country's problem is not letting innovation run its course and letting market forces drive technology.
Brazil also uses switch grass in addition to sugar cane. Both sugar cane too has a higher BTUh rate and processing/production is cheaper.
But like you said, too many egomanics in the way. |

CH4 or natural gas or methane is going to make its way to the forefront. Now if we can just get good 'ol C3H8 (propane) in there it'd be even better. ≈30% more BTUh than CH4. Just gotta get more efficient in the removal of it from natural gas to make the economy of scale more attractive. |

Exactly, dropping 4oz of ethanol in a gallon of gas is assonine.
Sadly, we do not have much in the way of market forces anymore, otherwise gas would be priced at $1.50 per gallon and oil would be at 50 a barrel.
The enemy of markets is central planning by elite fascists. That is privately owned but government run industry. Working to shape the economies....big failure.
No doubt JJ, market forces should be allowed to help in the development of alternative energy sources. Contrary to what many think, the idea that these are as efficient as we are led to believe is false. I think Dennis Miller said this a few years ago and I totally agree. You want to find ways to replace oil as huge energy source? Simply exhaust the supply and we will figure out what to use next. It really is that simple.
Elites have niched themselves into the economy (goog, msft, ge etc...) and believe we have reached homeostasis, where they wish to preserve their position in society and see no further developments. No further growth.
Sorry for the ramble gentlemen, but the only thing that moves markets, stocks, bonds, commods is simply currency. Devaluing the dollar has driven up the prices of all asset classes (except real estate). Stories of IRan this and Saudi arabia that is cover for your government printing more money. |

Grit I believe it was Benjamin Franklin that said a government that can't control the printing of its money is more dangerous than a standing army.
No it was Thomas Jefferson |
