That is why I feel that the best option right now is for the Flyers to focus on getting Voracek and Bourdon signed, take their best shot at Doan (without going way overboard in a bidding war) and go into the season with all of their trading assets intact plus a bit of bankable free cap space (and Pronger's LTIR allowance as a last resort) at their disposal.
Exactly, Bill! Homer clearly likes this team or he would have offered more for Weber.
Sign Voracek and MAB and although i would perhaps be aggressive with Doan to get the depth at wing back. The youngsters are going to have to step up though. Who knows what the opportunities will be at the trade dead line. |

I'm not convinced that this blue line will hold up, much less compete. There were times last year when they truly got pushed around by opposing forwards, most apparent in the NJ series. Without Pronger back there forwards do not fear enetering the zone, diddling with the puck or skating into the slot. Grossmann is okay as a defensive defenseman, and so is Coburn although I think he doesnt use his size as much. Timmonen IMHO is running low on tread and about finished. - edmac812
i 2 am worried about our blueline, carle was our most healthy 1
timmo-37 bad back
gross-bad knees/multible concussions
mezz-bad peculiar back

coburn-our only real hope=not 2 excited

As for the owner losing money, and it not being an issue, I know a few rich people. Not one of them likes losing any money. - Jsaquella
oh obviously not but people made it out to seem like if they matched then the owner would literally be bankrupt and the franchise would fold and they'd have to move.
what i was trying to say is that the owner has enough money to cover the loss for a few years at least. |

I'm sure what the Yotes are asking for Yandle would be prohibitively steep. However, he would be a good addition for these reasons:
- He's 25 years old.
- His cap-hit is a relatively reasonable $5.25M for the next 4 years.
- He's durable - has played 82 games the last 3 years.
- He has double-digit goals the last 3 years.
- He has been a plus player the last 3 years.
- He skates very well and would key the transition game.
- His 19 pts in 27 playoff games represents solid production.
Let's be clear, Shea Weber he is not! He lacks the right-handed bomb, nastiness, and D-zone presence of Weber but so do most defensemen.
Just curious: Why is he on the trading block, or even rumored to be so, in the first place? Is this ownership related? - BOSS_TWEED
I believe so. They are rebuilding to if Doan leaves. Gets Yandle's salary off the books plus brings them young talent. |

Flyers need to do a deal to improve their back end. They are not nearly as strong as what they were at this time last year.
I made it to one game (in Ottawa) against the Flyers. Spezza and Karlsson dominated Giroux, Karlsson owned the ice, I think he had four points. I love Giroux since his junior days with the Piques.
My point is the problem in that particular game was not Giroux. He plays a puck possession game as does Ottawa. But, he had nobody on his back end to support him. You cannot play up tempo puck possession without Dmen with the foot speed and smarts who can support the play and get back and protect your own end.
Holmgren is going to have to do a deal. Forget about Bobby Ryan for now. His best choice right now is Yendle, second is Boyle, third is J.Bo. Without the upgrade, I suspect the Flyers risk an organizational sophomore slump and are at risk of missing the playoffs. - spatso
It's been nice chatting with you but plz go worry about your own team already. Flyers won't miss the playoffs. |

Here here! If you want to build a true team (i.e. more like a family than just players) you NEED to let these players grow with each other like true brothers. It's easy to get caught up in names but moving young players every year would be folly. 2011-12 was the first year of the Giroux era (i.e. Richie & Carts gone). They now have a great core that can get the job done IMO. |

I'd tweak it per the general idea of tweaking things to perfect them. The system itself isn't bad though. Any system executed properly is a good one. |

My perspective is that right now this team is good enough right now to play and earn a high seeding in the Conference. The team that takes the ice in October, isn't necessarily the one that does in April. Moves can be made in the Season to address needs. This team has plenty to drop the puck right now. |

It's disappointing, but not really that amazing that the Preds matched. Weber would have been great for the Flyers.
The one mildly surprising thing was after making an unprecedented bid to Weber as a RFA was not followed by more proactive efforts to guarantee that the Predators wouldn't match.
It sure seem that Holmgren and the Flyers figured that the contract was enough to kill the horse and that they'd get Weber and keep the roster intact. That view, especially in hindsight, seems very cavalier.
That said, I like the core that the Flyers have. I liked it prior to the Weber offer sheet. As you point out, the key is health on the blue line. Right now, I think I'd stand pat, unless a good deal came down the pike.
Sure I'd be bidding on Doan, but without Weber, there's little reason to go long term and big bucks on an over 35 deal for him. Also, right now I see no reason to run out and overpay for Bobby Ryan or Keith Yandle, either.
Columbus trading Nash for a less than expected package isn't going to drop Ryan's asking price, and besides, it seems the noise of him being dealt has subsided. - Jsaquella
Weber might still end up here after Nashville gets cleaned out.

I'd like to see them sign Arnott to be the 4th line center. The solution on defense is more of a contribution from the forwards on the back end. Their biggest problem last year was getting pinned in their own zone, another defensive center would be a good addition. Lines would be:
Hartnell/G/Voracek
Simmonds/Briere/Schenn
Read/Couts/Wellwood
Fedotenko/Arnott/Talbot
That's at least an improvement on physicality and on the back end, and makes for an excellent 4th line. |
