Question is do the Flyers have the patience to wait on these kids or will they use them in a deal of some sort? - stveshdy
for a comparable value dman of similar age, it's a justifiable move... |

He has some offense to his game, but he's not likely to be a top PP unit guy or a guy you count on for 35 points a year. Even in junior he never really piled up points. He was counted on for his physicality and defense, as well as leadership.
He has the natural athletic ability to pull off a rush like that, but it will not be commonplace. - Jsaquella
no not expecting another one like that, or 35 points either, but to be entrenched in our top 4 & holding his own with 20 minutes a night will be fine, I think he's too good to be in the bottom pairing |

Thats a no brainer for a team that struggles to draft young defenseman who are productive. |

I'd trade high on Read(high IMO since no body of work) and package him with MAB and pick(s) and Prospect(s) for Ryan.
hartnell/G/Ryan
Schenn/Briere/Voracek
Simmons/Couts/Fedetenko
WellWood/Talbot/Rinaldi
I see Wellwood moving up to 3rd line and Fed dropping back. |

I agree he is, or at least will be. Right now, I'd spot him with different partners to see how he fits. I;d love to see him with Timonen, but I'm not sure he'd be able to play in all the situations Kimmo does.
I do think we see a lot of the top 5(i.e. all of them near or over 20 minutes a night), and whomever is the sixth guy is a 12-14 minute a night guy |

During the rookie scrimmage, Cousins and Laughton were beautiful to watch. Whenever they were out there the pot was getting stirred, over and over again.Assuming they make it to the NHL and stay awhile, they will be beloved by Flyers fans...and pretty much despised by everyone else - Jsaquella

I'm fine with Manning, MAB, or Gus being in the mix for the 6th d spot to start the season. However, after reading Bill and others if Visnovsky for his cap hit and term would be the safe bet if he is shipped back to the Ducks. Homer doesn't like keeping 2nd round picks anyway. - ravishingone
I don't know what the Flyers attentions are but for some reason they just can't let Bobby Ryan go. I think they make a serious play for him.

it should, read is a good player. not great in one particular skill set, but solid enough to be an effective in all three zones. - tomburton99
i thought he was fantastic last year, and am flabbergasted by those so willing to throw him in a deal. for weber i understand, but he's not a guy i want to move. i only see improvement for him. |

He's going to be 27 years old and may never put up those numbers again. I like Read but if I can get Ryan back I would do it. Ryan has much more talent then Read will ever have. Read was very productive though. |

I see no reason why Read can't match or improve on last year's numbers.
And he won't be 27 until after this upcoming Season. He just turned 26 in June. |

I'm skeptical that he can get much better, but I'd love to be proven wrong. That Cap hit for two more years is a bargain, even if he only brings what he did last season.

I think the biggest question for me, is what line does Read fit best? I'm really not sure and that isn't a knock against him. He was on the 4th line in the playoffs, which is certainly too low, but even with Jagr and JVR gone still a lot of depth in the top 9 forwards.
By the way, just my opinion, I think Cousins earns a spot on the 4th line. I think the organization views him going back to junior for a 4th year of limited growth experience. |

I've been looking at them & trying to figure a per game minutes goal somewhat, it seems that Schenn,& Grossman, in particular will have to boost the totals that they've become accustomed to in the past season.
I see a potential plan, (like you pointed out), for a top 5 to play the majority of minutes, maybe impossible for us to postulate until we know more about Kimmo's health.
But if Kimmo cannot handle too many minutes, we have a top 4 of Coburn, Mez, Schenn & Grossman, and that may mean that we lean on our bottom 2 more than in the past.
Man, Carle's minutes will really be missed.

All I'm saying is I would deal Read if I can get back Ryan. Read did well this year and maybe he will continue to do so but Ryan is a lock for 30 and has done it for awhile now. His upside is greater than Read's IMO.
26/27 the point is he's not you typical rookie. |

Matt Read was 6th among Flyer forwards in average icetime in last years playoffs. He average over 15 minutes a game. That's the beauty of Read. He can play anywhere.

He just turned 18, and he needs to put on weight and muscle to be ready for the NHL game.

i see read as a kind of high-end umberger. a versatile, stick him anywhere, well-rounded player with good hockey sense. guys like that are super valuable, and while ryan obviously has more offensive ability, i like the utilitarian guys more. i'd love ryan, and if it came at the expense of read, so be it. just not a move i'm anxious to see happen. |
