You're alot of double talk Mr. Meltzer. I read your blog today. I had read your blog from two days ago as well. Two days ago you were talking about how they should make a trade. Today you say, "I had no doubt they'd match."
If you're going to put a disclaimer about speculation out there, especially with the extreme speculating you went into, then your writing is all for naught.
A few quotes:
1) There was never a question to me whether the Nashville Predators could match the Flyers' offer sheet to Shea Weber.
NO QUESTION? SEE BELOW
2) I would not be too surprised if there are rumblings tomorrow and/or Tuesday that the Predators' ownership has green-lighted David Poile to match the offer sheet.
WOULD NOT BE "TOO" SURPRISED? Means you would've been at least a little suprised.
3) Personally, I consider Weber enough of a difference-maker on the ice to advocate that the Flyers go the extra mile here to make sure Predators do not match the offer.
...MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT MATCH- I thought there was no doubt.
4)By the way, with the crazy way hockey's cap economics work, the Predators are actually in better position than Philly to get Voracek signed to a long-term deal than the Flyers are; especially if there's a no-match on Weber.
...IF THERE'S A NO-MATCH ON WEBER.
5) The already money-losing Predators' pride just got themselves into an almost impossible fiscal mess, with the situation a lock to get worse before it gets better.
MONEY-LOSING PREDS- You obviously have NO IDEA what you're talking about when it comes to the Preds' organization. They made ALOT of money last year. They sold out almost all of their games. They had five playoff sellouts. Corporate sponsorship went crazy. There's another new owner to the group.
Get a clue buddy. Sorry you're so butt hurt y'all failed your attempt to poach Weber away. It is what it is and Philly is going to have a not so hot season! |

Totally. You learn absolutely nothing from that show. That show could be so much better. And there is actually a need for a well done show in that "kind" of format imo. |

Not that Bill really needs defending but...............
I guessed you missed the part where Bill said it was best for both your team, the Flyers (reputation I believe) and the league in general if a deal could have been reached. I believe he was interested in the BIG picture far more than just having Shea join the Flyers. Bill is very fair in his assessments and far from an O&B ass kisser imo.

You really misread a lot of information on this blog, blogs of others, and reports from insiders like Craig Button and Darren Dreger.
Your #1- If you comprehended the blog and listened to what many hockey experts said was the Predators could match the deal but it would come with a great deal of financial risk for a small market team. Many people thought they could match but the possibility of paying 26 million in 11 months for one player which is just below 20% of the worth of the franchise and the amount collected in ticket revenue, the question was would the Predators match.
#2- I think the author was pretty clear along that his initial thoughts were they were going to match. Many along with Bill stated they were surprised Nashville did come out earlier than Wednesday to say they were going to match
#3- From a perspective that you have no doubt a team can match, the team submitting the player should try everything they can to get the player they covet once an offer sheet is signed. For example when the Blues were submitting offer sheets to many players throughout the 80s and early 90s, they tried to make trades to get the players they wanted. They offer sheeted Shanahan and tried to get NJ to take BrindAmour and other pieces so they wouldn't match. That was clear that was what Bill was saying. If the Flyers really want Weber, you should consider making a compensatory offer that Nashville would like so they wouldn't match.
#4- Real easy here if you read the next sentence. The Predators can overpay per cap space (not actual dollars) to get Voracek signed to a long term deal. If Voracek signed with the Predators, it would be for more money than Flyers because of cap space not actual dollars. If Voracek was going to get $5m a year, he'd sign a long term deal. Nashville could do it because they have to overpay to get to cap floor. Flyers could give him the same amount but don't have the cap flexibility.
#5- Nashville reporters, TSN insiders, many other people have demonstrated and illustrated how the Weber deal hampers the franchise investment financially. They have a pretty good idea and backed it up with revenue numbers and other statements.
