The team doesn't choose what picks they send in an offer sheet their contract they offer does...

Actually we have THE largest hockey market.....but it doesn't make much difference.
Can and do are two totally different things. The Flyers and Rangers actively and aggressively pursue (and more often than not acquire) EVERYONE. Pisses me off. - Phenom
What are you whining about? The Flyers didn't get Weber and the Rangers had to give up a bunch for Nash. Nash is not the answer to the Leafs problems, and furthermore, it would have cost the Leafs way more to acquire Nash considering the value of a Leafs 1st rounder. |

They wouldn't have matched it if the money wasn't there plain and simple yes it's a fan statement but if the people with the money down there said we can't match then he would flyer right now - arnpriorguy
Really? So you are saying by matching the offer sheet "THEY DEFINITELY HAVE THE MONEY"? Just want to clarify exactly what you are saying. |

They borrowed the bonus money from one of their minority shareholders.

i can't wait for the flyers to offer sheet somebody with a 100 mil signing bonus, that is the logical next step, maybe even offer the player shares in the team. - Oilhab

Congratulations Nashville Predators and their fans, awesome news and more importantly SUCK that Flyers......
I think in a way the Offer Sheet was good, it basically layed out for Nashville what they needed to do to keep Weber, I hope the Fans truely keep behind the franchise and get more fans and keeps evolving into an awesome hockey market. |

Yes, letting another team negotiate contracts for your free agents; just a brilliant way to run a franchise. BTW...how is that Vanek contract the Oilers negotiated for the Sabres working out? 26 goals for $6.4 million in salary last year. What a bargain! |

weather the share holders put the money in is not the point the BUSINESS will still be operating at a loss...now how long do minority share holders intend to lose money for ... 7 mil last year for a 2nd round playoff loss...
now dont get me wrong congrats to Nashville for keeping Weber but they still can't afford him based on the team revenues ... not the owners ability to fork out money |

they will find a way to compete, somehow, they did quite alot with nothing other than weber suter and rinne, lets see what weber can do without suter
that doesnt change the fact that people couldnt say the preds will match without being told no chance they cant afford to pay 26mill this year and so on - dmarsden2988
Yup. Take New Jersey last year for instance, or Phoenix these past couple years. |

Gotta agree with joel878 here, the Philly fans do sound rather butt hurt about the offer sheet match, it is a greasy move anyways, good for Nashville for matching. |

if weber was gonna truly bankrupt the franchise and make them fold they obviously wouldn't have matched.
the guys that made this decision are a lot smarter than you, me, and everyone else on this forum and they crunched the numbers for 5 long days and decided they could do it. no one even knows what nashville's money situation really is considering we're going off Forbes which the NHL consistently says is 100% false.
at the end of the day...considering what other contracts have been handed out, this contract for Weber is fair and exactly what he deserved and Poile will probably call Holmgren and thank him for getting Weber locked up for life. nashville has known for years that this is the only type of contract that would've got weber signed. |

I was talking more along the lines of playing decent hockey without having a great team, but yes, I hear you.

I am surprised really. Think NAshville would have been better off with the 4 first rounders. Possibly using those picks to try to land JBo, Yandle and more. - willey101
Poor them, instead of Yandle and JBo, they had to settle for Weber. |

I understand what ur saying but again if the majority ownership said no then he would be a flyer and the preds would still be losing 7 million a year so either way doesn't matter that's where the shareholders came in and folked over the cash to cover the contract |

Certainly disappointed, but wouldn't you be if it was your team?
And what is greasy about it? Poile couldn't get a contract done with his franchise player in spite of having exclusive negotiating rights for the last year. So Holmgren tried to sign the player away. What's the problem? |

It's not a great financial model either way, but now they are on the hook for Weber's money no matter what. Tough spot to be in. |
